Not even a Band-Aid. Signing Sal Fasano is putting a piece of one-ply paper towel on a gaping wound.
Just for the record, it is a minor league deal...

Its the same as the Lilly for Howard deal where he wouldn't give up Bush or McGowan. There are countles other examples of where he has a good deal on the table and he screws it up by not forcing the action a little.
But you're right about the letting the new GM rebuild. That's actually why I was excited about Lincecum, and that's why this (1 year) contract is actually a good thing. It doesn't handcuff anyone.

Lilly for Howard??
When was this rumoured? And What was the deal exactly? I don't recall hearing about this one.

This was rumoured the year before Howard's rookie season (although he was coming off a year at AAA where he had over 50 extra base hits). Thome was still relatively healthy and blocking Howard's progress. The Phills wanted Lilly and JP asked for Howard (since we didn't have any power hitting prospects in the pipeline). The basics were just a straight up swap although eventually I think Gross and Rosario were included. As I understand it the deal fell through because we wouldn't include any real pitching prospects (McGowan, Bush etc...) to soften the loss of their best hitting prospect.
