As you can see, Ricciardi's drafting record is superb for what he had to work with (consistently low draft budgets).

Previous organizational unwillingness to pay overslot aside, should JP (and AA for that matter) be judged according to what were the upside and downside risks known at the time of a given trade or draft pick, or according to how it panned out.

In other words will AA always be wrong for trading Wallace for Gose, was JP always wrong for picking Romero over Tully, or can they subsequently be proved geniuses?

This is important. Most sports fans lazily use 100% hindsight. I have always been all about using a mix of hindsight and context.

A GM has to be judged on hindsight (i.e. results). A good GM will look good in hindsight, even if some of his moves are stinkers. A bad one will have more bad moves in hindsight. That is just the way it is. Ricciardi was so afraid to take risks that his moves were generally in between (or inconsequential either way). His drafting, as I've mentioned before, was poor to start with but improved over time.

I think it is OK to say "this move didn't make sense at the time but worked out well", or "this move made sense at the time but just didn't work out". However, if you say the latter so many times, it generally is an indication of either a unlucky/bad GM or an apologist fanbase.

As for Arencibia, JP also took a little heat for picking Arencibia as high as he did, if I remember correctly. Arencibia looks like part of our future core here in Toronto. He deserves to point that out.

I love AA and I love the moves that he has made thus far. I think he is a solid GM and I am happy he is here over JP to be sure. But I think JP deserves some credit for the young talent on our team and in the minors. Romero, Arencibia, Snider, Hill, Lind, Cecil, Marcum....these are solid players that will be in Toronto for a long time. There's a pretty good blog on it at:

JP needed to go, no doubt, but he left this organization far from bare. I think AA has benefited from working with JP, because he knows the Jays system so well. JP's lies, his managerial choices and flip floping on Moneyball mentality cost him his job ultimately. But he drafted pretty well for this team. Everyone focuses on his failures (Russ Adams anyone?) but he brought in some great looking ball palyers.

AA is the best GM in Toronto, but JP deserves the opportunity to remind us that he selected some pretty good players.

He may have calmed dow in his second year but he was on the way to a great one this year. he finally was consisten with power but unfortunately he got hurt. Hes still one of the best SS in the game, getting Yunel will let us forget aobut not taking him. Not to say romero hasn't lived up to his expectations.
