That amnesty clause/Bautista comment still never fails to make me laugh.
But yes, it's all happening.

Nice deal.
Only one year. Minimal risk. High reward. Gives positional versatility. Not much to dislike about this.

What do we feel about this signing, are we glad it was 1 year deal, or would we been better with a 2 year deal at 35- 36 mill?

Semien's choice I'm sure. I bet he wouldn't have done a 2 year deal. He likely wants to prove he's the guy from 2019.

Makes sense, another bet on yourself candidate, but is it an overpay for 1 year considering his 2020 year...

I love these deals where the player has all kinds of incentive to ball out.
We don't need him long-term because of Groshans and Martin.

Could end up a 2/36 year deal if we slap a QO on him if he rebounds

Re: Jays Sign Marcus Semien - 1yr/$18m
Was not expecting this. Wow.
We needed an above-average infield defender, and we got one. Except this one put up an 8.9 WAR season just two season's ago. Bo will need to demonstrate improved defense if he wants to stay at SS.
With Semien at 2B to start, I guess that pushes Biggio to 3B, Vlad to 1B, and Tellez to the bench/DH. It looks like Tellez will draw the short straw and struggle to get regular at-bats.
Springer
Bichette
Guerrero
Hernandez
Biggio
Gurriel
Semien
Tellez
Kirk
If Semien hits at all like he did in 2019, that lineup just went from potentially obscene to potentially devastating.
I just hope we have enough money in the tank for pitching help. I sense a trade or two coming.

And in a market where most teams aren't spending big, a one-year bridge even to a contract where he gets a similar AAV over 3 years makes more sense than a two-year deal.
This is great value. Even if his 2019 offense is a mirage (and it likely is), he's a very good defensive middle infielder who has posted 4.9 fWAR/650 over the past three seasons, signed to a no-risk one-year deal. He's also QO-eligible as the A's didn't apply the tag to him, so if he performs we have the option of tagging him and either retaining him for similar money, and recouping a bit of draft capital if he departs.

**** your asterisk.

It's actually good value for his 2020 season, even. His 2020, if applied to a 650 PA season, was worth about 3.3 fWAR. $18m for 3.3 fWAR is pretty darned solid, especially without any attached risk.

**** your asterisk.

Re: Jays Sign Marcus Semien - 1yr/$18m
Yea, a lot to like about this. One year thing doesn't hurt us at all, since we have some prospects on the way. Even if he doesn't put up his 2019 stats, he's still gonna provide more value to the infield than the likes of Drury and Shaw lol.
Our lineup is looking so nice. Just need a solid starting pitcher and we're set.

Re: Jays Sign Marcus Semien - 1yr/$18m
If our manager has any skill, there should be enough at-bats to go around. We have 5 infielders for 4 positions. That’s 80% playing time for everybody. If you give Rowdy 60% playing time, everybody else moves up to about 85%. And that doesn’t include time at the DH for either Rowdy or Vlad.

The fact that we can slap that QO on him next year makes this even more amazing. I absolutely love this move.

Re: Jays Sign Marcus Semien - 1yr/$18m
Great addition, much like springer this is a perfect add. Positional versatility, bounce back candidate and I never really have an issue with a one year deal for anyone. Last up is filling in that rotation.. Im excited for this season! Hopefully get the jays back in Toronto and fans in the stadium. Would feel kinda hollow to have a great year in front of mostly empty stadiums

I have very minimal faith in Charlie Montoyo, but I feel like he is decent at managing people.
Also, the fact that we have given him so many toys to play with offensively, not sure he can really make a mistake. Though maybe I am being naive and he will prove me wrong when Danny Jansen ends up the leadoff hitter during game 65-145.

I thought about making this point. It seems like Shatkins has done their very best to idiot-proof this lineup. Not sure how Charlie can screw this up. We will have to monitor the situation LOL
