Bound?
He got the Baker Mayfield contract. Which is essentially a mid-level deal for a mid-level QB without a ton of guaranteed money beyond the first year. That's smart business.
Teams get in trouble when they hand out top of the market contracts for QB's who aren't that caliber of player. This is not the case with Darnold.
How did that smart business fare with the previous bridge qb contract? Length of the contract doesn't matter when your MO is paying mediocre quarterbacks again and again
without a long term answer.
Having a mediocre qb only works when they are making rookie scale type of money.
Just fine.
When the team decided to move on from Carroll, it meant there would be changes coming. Pete was fully behind Geno & had an eye on winning. That's why there was never a concrete long-term plan at QB. Carroll at his age wanted to win with his guys. Both players & coaches. He had final say. This is why they ultimately decided to hire a new coach. They recognized a change was needed.
Just to be clear, the team has wanted to draft a QB the last two years since Carroll's departure. The plan is to develop a young QB for the long-term. That's why Darnold did NOT get a long-term commitment from the team.
Ideally, they would have preferred to draft a QB last year (Penix). But those plans we're foiled when Penix went earlier than expected. He was the guy they ultimately wanted. They even tried to trade up for him before Atlanta took him.
There wasn't a QB in this year's draft, other than Cam Ward, that was worthy of taking in the first round. So, Milroe is basically a lottery ticket. Who may or may not pan out. But they only sacrificed a late 3rd rounder on him & if it works out, then they'll have their guy.
