So Rodgers is trending towards returning to the Packers, after all the drama of last year.
The logic is that in a relatively weak NFC, it would be his best chance to go to the Super Bowl.
Packers could have the best record again, since they’re in a weak division.
But they’re more than $25 million over the cap and that’s not counting for the cap hit from Rodgers staying or what Davante Adams will be paid.
In fact, it may be better for Adams if Rodgers doesn’t return because without him, Packers may be more likely to let Adams leave in free agency whereas if Rodgers come back, the team will probably franchise tag Adams, denying him a big long term contract.
Regardless of what they do with just those two players, team has a lot of needs and some big salaries to deal with. For instance, Zadarius Smith is on the last year of his deal and is scheduled to make almost $28 million next season while Preston Smith is also in his last year, scheduled to make almost $20 million.
If they address the cap and keep all the best players, then the 2023 season will also have cap problems, with Kenny Clark scheduled for over $23 million and Rodgers due a new contract.
So Rodgers goes back for 2022, it could be the last shot as 2023 could mean cutting or losing some other star players.
