If he was making Corey Joseph money or less, and we didn't draft him, I don't think people would be complaining. He actually has some nice qualities if you don't get hyper-focused on the shooting woes. He can run an offense, accurate passer, has good size for the position and plays hard. If his shooting comes around he's a starting quality guard. If it doesn't improve much (needs to improve at least a little) he's still a decent backup. Now If Weaver gives him some crazy extension like he did for Bagley than yeah I'll be ticked off.

Killian's draft position absolutely plays a large role in how people feel about him. That also cuts both ways.

Being a high draft is really the primary reason that a lot of people are still holding out hope that he's going to eventually become a steady player. At this point I think its quite safe to say that he will never become a legit impact player. Honestly, he needs to take a big leap to even be a consistently average player. Yet, there are still a lot of people out there that are willing to continue to give him more rope.

If Killian was drafted in the Saben Lee slot and not #7, it would be basically a consensus among Piston fans that the team should cut bait with Hayes.

Who are these people who are willing to give Killian more rope?

Seems the consensus is that at best he MIGHT become a decent back up PG.

Might become a decent back up PG isn't willing to give him more rope

The Detroit shouldn't trade or give up on Killian because he's only played x number of games crowd.

Or the people who say he's a serviceable backup which he isn't

Cojo has career averages of 7.0 PPG on 44.3%/34.7%, 2.5 RPG, 3.0 APG, 0.8 STL and 0.2 BLK in 21.9 MPG.
Killian has career averages of 8.1 PPG on 37.4%/27.6%, 2.9 RPG, 5.2 APG, 1.2 STL and 0.4 BLK in 26.1 MPG.

So basically Cojo hits one more shot for every 14.5 taken than Killian. The idea that he's absolutely a viable rotation player if Hayes is considered a waste of space is comparatively ridiculous. He doesn't rebound better, pass better, or defend better. And that's not a defense of Killian. Cojo is just as bad when looking at the big picture.

You could make that TS% argument for any player. "Such and such would be a lot better if he just hit x more shots per game." The fact is that the numbers matter and matter a great deal. Margins in the NBA are razor thin. Killian is the least efficient scorer in the league. Importantly, he's also a non-threat as both a spacer and a driver; not only can he not score at anything approaching an acceptable percentage, but defenders also do not respect him at the three-point line or on the drive.

CoJo is a viable NBA third-string point guard. He's a capable enough at all of the essentials. Killian has his own strengths, for sure. Scoring is, to say the least, absolutely and utterly not one of those strengths, and it's not permissible to be a horrendous scorer in the NBA. He's better than CoJo in every other area, but that doesn't matter. CoJo is a serviceable scorer whereas Killian is terrible, and that's why CoJo is a serviceable rotation player whereas Killian is not.
