What honestly is the sixers plan, "keep sucking until they happen upon the next great NBA player in the draft.....even though they don't seem to actually have a plan, plan".
Errr....
We were pretty close to that delusional. The Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva signings had overwhelming support on these boards, and the Josh Smith signing was rather popular too.
I was against those and even I underestimated just how awful they would be.
There was a LOT of negativity revolving around the BG and CV signings. BG people hated because we just extended Rip, but at least there was some hope he could be a mini-Microwave for us. CV pretty much got destroyed on this board for his lack of defense. A few people defended the move or, like me, took a "let's give it a chance" approach but there was definitely not some overwhelming feeling of support or optimism on this board.
JSmooth was a lot more polarizing. That one basically came down to talent vs. fit. Again, a lot of people viewed it much the same as the BG signing; a redundancy of talent at a position of relative strength with Moose at the 4. IF we had traded Monroe for a 3&D SF and ran with Smith/Dre up front things might have gone a bit different, but trying to force him into a square hole was never a good idea.
There are always a few fans on every board who go a little nuts, but I definitely don't think the majority of the board was delusional over any of those moves. I think we went way more crazy with the Stuckey hype early on in his career. Or the (insert random rookie) hype. Every 2nd round pick is a future starter in this league. And Arnie could make any injury history a non-factor and evidently was filling gatoraid bottles with water from the fountain of youth. Give us all your hobbled, aging vets and watch us win the championship.
