Smith for Amare is not what's being proposed (and isn't possible given the salary difference).
They want to dump Jennings (and Luigi) as well. Jennings still has a lot of talent and drive, and is chucking mainly because we surrounded him with an anemic offense that more or less demands he shoot more than he should. Does he need more discipline? Of course. There's a lot of work to be done, but give him a legit SF, some 3 and D wings and a solid coach, and he could still be a top tier PG.
Taking Amare means we can resign Moose, and then do little else. Who is our starting SF for the next season and a half? Who is our starting PG? Singler and Bynum? Please.
We can make this trade and New York still says yes:
Smith, Bynum, Jerebko, Datome
for
Shumpert and Amare
Trio of trash (Bynum, jerebko, Datome) are making 9M next season and we all know they wont see the floor and if they do (in Bynum's case) will harm our team rather than help.
Since we already are paying 9M to these guys you can subtract that from Amare's deal leaving us paying him only 10M. Amare should be able to give us 10-12 minutes off the bench and Shumpert most likely can be resigned for relatively cheap considering how terrible he has played this season.
People seem to forget that this season we paid Bynum, Jerebko, Billups, Charlie V TWENTY MILLION to sit on the bench and do nothing but now they are going nuts about Amare sitting on the bench doing nothing as well? Come on
That I can live with, though I'd make the Knicks toss in Hardaway Jr, either in addition to Shumpert (if the money works) or in place of him. I want his scoring ability if we're taking that sandbag off their hands.
Knicks wont toss in Hardaway Jr because they know they can deal Tim, Shumpert, filler for Lowry
What about this 3 team deal?
To Knicks: Smith, Lowry
To Detroit: Bargnani, Udrih, Aldrich
To Raptors: Hardaway, Shumpert, MWP
That being said gotta love this snippet from Chad Ford (original Darko fan boy #1)
Johannes (Denver)
Why don't the Pistons and Pelicans swap Josh Smith and either Gordon or Evans? Contracts match and it seems like those guys would fit better on each other's teams.

Josh Smith may have the most untradable contract in the NBA right now.
