Pistons' adjustments will continue as players return from injuries
Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester looks forward to having all of his players back. Not just back in the lineup, but back at 100 percent. The Pistons were again without Ben Gordon (groin), Tayshaun Prince (left knee) and Will Bynum (left ankle) for their game Friday night against the New Orleans Hornets.

But even when they get back into the lineup, it will take them some time to round into form, Kuester said. “You go through these emotions where, ‘Aw they’re available, they’re available,’ ” Kuester said. “But you grow accustomed to what they have been as a player. It takes time for those guys to come off these injuries. “There’s no magic cure, so it’s one of these things where they continually work at getting better and better.”

Kuester cited Richard Hamilton as an example. Hamilton has played eight games since returning from ankle and hamstring injuries, and Kuester said he’s still not the player he was in the past and will be in the future. Kuester referred to the first game of the season, when Hamilton scored 25 points in a 96-74 win over Memphis. “His explosion off those shots -- he had his lift,” Kuester said. “When you’re a shooter, your legs play such an important role in your shot. I think that’s one of the things he’s starting to gain back a little each game. That’s important for us.” Hamilton, a 45.3 percent career shooter, is 53-for-146 (36.3 percent) since returning to the lineup.

The Streak is at 2!
What Happened:
The Pistons shut off Chris Paul at the pressure valve, got to the line and destroyed the Hornets on the boards en route to an overtime victory that was closer than it should have been.

The Good:
All around, the Pistons seemed ready for this offense. Chris Paul was taken out of the game until the end, when he got on a tear and brought his team back.

Frankly, the Hornets had to make some impossible shots to stay in this one. Detroit was on top of its game, and had New Orleans resorting to fouling just to stay on pace.

Ben Wallace had one of his best games as a Piston. I'd be interested in seeing the list of 35 year old players who have grabbed 20 rebounds in a game. Is it more than 50 players? I bet it's not.

The Bad:
The fouling thing almost worked, as the Pistons missed six free throws in the fourth quarter. Rodney Stuckey was terrible prior to a heroic OT performance. That said, it was a pretty damn heroic OT performance.

The Fats Domino Unsung Hero:
Austin Daye. Great plays late in the game are fun to watch, but if he hadn't stepped up in the 2nd quarter, there would have been no late game heroics.

The Takeaway:
The Pistons had the right game plan to beat this team. They made Chris Paul put the ball on the floor. They made the Hornets pay for playing the perimeter (10-2 OReb advantage), and they had much more balanced game than the previous victory.

This should also put to rest any notions that the return of our best players is a hindrance to this team. If the Pistons are going to make a playoff push, they will need contributions from Rip, Tay, Gordon etc...

Make more comments for the happy times!!

Rodney Stuckey sticks it to Hornets in overtime
Rodney Stuckey picked the right time to make an impact. Having a poor night for four quarters, Stuckey made consecutive 3-point plays and had eight points in overtime as the Pistons defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 110-104, at The Palace Friday. "He just didn't feel good, you could tell by his body language," said coach John Kuester, who was going to keep Stuckey on the bench late in the game until Stuckey convinced him to put him back in. Stuckey scored 13 but was 4-for-15 from the field. He struggled with his shooting, but was aggressive in overtime going to the basket. "This (a loss) would have been a tough pill to swallow," Kuester said. "I would have been proud of the guys, but this was a game you wanted to finish and that's what we did."

Ben Wallace (13 points, 21 rebounds) split two free throws to give the Pistons a 107-104 lead with 48.6 seconds left. With the chance to tie the score for the Hornets, David West lost the ball to Richard Hamilton.Hamilton was fouled at the other end and made both free throws, giving the Pistons a 109-104 lead.Hamilton had 32 points to lead the Pistons. Wallace, Jonas Jerebko, Charlie Villanueva and Stuckey all had 13 points. "The guys played hard the whole game," Villanueva said. "We moved the ball, the young guys stepped up, it was a good overall win." David West had 25 points and Chris Paul 24 for the Hornets. Paul's driving layup tied the game 96-96 with 24.9 seconds remaining in regulation. The Pistons had an opportunity to win it in regulation, Hamilton missed a jumper with time expiring.

Hamilton had one of his better games since returning from an ankle sprain Dec. 26. "He was huge in the way he wanted the ball," Kuester said. The Hornets turned the ball over when Emeka Okafor mishandled a pass from Paul, but Stuckey missed a baseline leaner. Paul made the Pistons pay with his tying layup. The Hornets were down 13 in the second half. But the combination of Paul and West took over, with Paul's jumper giving the Hornets an 83-82 lead with 8 minutes left. The Pistons exploded with one of their finest first quarters of the season, taking a 31-16 lead. The 31 points was the most they had scored more in the first quarter since Dec. 4 against Milwaukee. The Pistons held New Orleans to 27.8 percent shooting (5-of-18) in the first quarter while taking an 18-point lead.

A brand new Daye
Austin Daye is going through a typical rookie season. While Jonas Jerebko has surprised everyone with his consistency and adaptablity, Daye is really is the prototypical first-year player: flashes of brilliance followed by a return to unexceptional play.

Daye had one of his better games Friday, scoring 12 points in 15 minutes. "He's refreshing to watch," Kuester said. "He loves playing, he loves to go out there and mix it up. We all know he needs more strength, but he made some big buckets." The Pistons are instilling in Daye the need for consistency. "There have been certain games where he's been sharp, but other games where the pace of the game we have to get him accustomed to night in and night out," said Kuester before the game.

A 6-foot-11 player with offensive skills doesn't come around often. Daye appears comfortable playing anything from shooting guard to power forward. "You've seen how the league has evolved and the different type of (power forwards), and with his length, he'll be able to play a number of positions," Kuester said.

Sam Dalembert provides relief to Haiti, 76ers
The Philadelphia 76ers center finds 48 minutes of distraction each night on the court. Dalembert made a $100,00 donation to help relief efforts, then had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lift the Sixers to a 98-86 win over the Sacramento Kings on Friday night.

The Philly fans responded. The Sixers said after the game they raised more than $30,000 at the UNICEF table on the concourse during Friday's game. Dalembert pledged to match the amount of money donated by Sixers fans.

Jason Thompson had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Kings. Kevin Martin scored 19 points in his first game after missing the past 32 with a wrist injury. Martin was injured Nov. 2 when he collided with Iverson, then with Memphis.

Kobe Bryant scored 30 points, Pau Gasol returned from a six-game injury absence with 20 points and six rebounds, and the Lakers re-established their dominance in Los Angeles with a 126-86 victory over the Clippers on Friday night.

Andrew Bynum had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Lakers, whose rivalry got a bit more heated in a third-quarter confrontation between point guards Baron Davis and Derek Fisher. Davis got a flagrant foul for throwing an elbow into Gasol's chest before exchanging pointed words and technical fouls with Fisher.

Eric Gordon and Craig Smith scored 17 points apiece for the Clippers, who got the defending champions' attention nine days earlier when they ended a nine-game losing streak to the Lakers with a 102-91 victory.
