Rodney Stuckey picked the right time to make an impact. Having a poor night for four quarters, Stuckey made consecutive 3-point plays and had eight points in overtime as the Pistons defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 110-104, at The Palace Friday. "He just didn't feel good, you could tell by his body language," said coach John Kuester, who was going to keep Stuckey on the bench late in the game until Stuckey convinced him to put him back in. Stuckey scored 13 but was 4-for-15 from the field. He struggled with his shooting, but was aggressive in overtime going to the basket. "This (a loss) would have been a tough pill to swallow," Kuester said. "I would have been proud of the guys, but this was a game you wanted to finish and that's what we did."
Ben Wallace (13 points, 21 rebounds) split two free throws to give the Pistons a 107-104 lead with 48.6 seconds left. With the chance to tie the score for the Hornets, David West lost the ball to Richard Hamilton.Hamilton was fouled at the other end and made both free throws, giving the Pistons a 109-104 lead.Hamilton had 32 points to lead the Pistons. Wallace, Jonas Jerebko, Charlie Villanueva and Stuckey all had 13 points. "The guys played hard the whole game," Villanueva said. "We moved the ball, the young guys stepped up, it was a good overall win." David West had 25 points and Chris Paul 24 for the Hornets. Paul's driving layup tied the game 96-96 with 24.9 seconds remaining in regulation. The Pistons had an opportunity to win it in regulation, Hamilton missed a jumper with time expiring.
Hamilton had one of his better games since returning from an ankle sprain Dec. 26. "He was huge in the way he wanted the ball," Kuester said. The Hornets turned the ball over when Emeka Okafor mishandled a pass from Paul, but Stuckey missed a baseline leaner. Paul made the Pistons pay with his tying layup. The Hornets were down 13 in the second half. But the combination of Paul and West took over, with Paul's jumper giving the Hornets an 83-82 lead with 8 minutes left. The Pistons exploded with one of their finest first quarters of the season, taking a 31-16 lead.
