We're talking about a player who was All-Pro as a rookie, hasn't missed a Pro Bowl since he's been in the NFL and is still in his prime. Again, that's a big price to pay, so I don't disagree with your larger point. But if Waynes had any greatness in him -- and he's at least gotten to the point where he's solid -- we'd have already seen it by now.
I definitely see your point. Peterson is another level and he showed it right away. I think the allure is that it might make the defense stout and unbeatable again. To that aim I would agree he and the deal might be worth it. But the Vikings will still have a major weakness on oline trying to finish this season no matter how it ends. After the season they might then be completely cap strapped plus they will be missing a 1st and 3rd in this draft so chances of improving much dwindles. it's certainly an all in move on this season. Which might be worth it given what they paid this QB and what his chances are of staying healthy for three years behind a now classic VIkings Oline. They would have to get creative to improve that line next offseason if they bring Peterson in. It might mean some cuts occur.
Yeah, it's a tough one. At the very least, Waynes at least seems to be serviceable at this point, so it's not like it's a dire, desperate need. At any rate, team building is hard! I have pretty good confidence in our brain trust, so whatever they decide to do, I'm generally good with.
