Cheating Way To Get A Superstar?

Post#1 » by numbas » Fri Feb 22, 2008 10:55 am

i just thought of this and u must not be able to do it cuz it sounds to good to be true but....

cant a team over the cap just sign say gilbert arenas this summer to a 1 year minimum deal then say the next offseason we'll just give u max money?

i mean once a player is on ur team arent u aloud to re sign him even if it means going over or if ur already over the cap?

Remember the T-Wolves and Joe Smith deal? That's why.

incorrect. the t-wolves were admonished because they were paying him under the table on top of the signed contract (which is illegal)

to the post: you are required to have bird rights over players to be able to sign them regardless of your cap. 1 year does not grant you bird rights to the player.

do you know how the cap comes into play when it comes to "Cash considerations"? like if I remember correctly PHX traded their draft pick for cash? There's also sometimes "Cash considerations" within other trades that involve just players. Are those cash considerations suppose to be within a cap limit, or can they be any amount?

82. Can cash be included as part of a trade package?

Players can be traded for cash, and cash can be included in trade packages. The amount of cash is limited to $3 million. The cash is NOT considered when matching salaries under the Traded Player exception.

In a sign-and-trade arrangement, if the contract contains a signing bonus, then any amount of this bonus paid by the signing team counts toward the $3 million limit (see question number 76).

Pretty sure this includes trades for draft picks.

Good luck convincing a max player to sign for cheap.

One injury, and they'll have hundreds of articles written about how dumb of a choice that was for the player.

How do you convince a guy to take millions and millions of dollars less just to pay him WHAT HE'S WORTH the next year?

on top of that what happens if the player get injured or doesnt play good why would the team sign him to a max deal the next year? THe player ends up getting screwed.

A player has to be on the team for 3 years before you obtain his bird rights... So, theoretically you COULD sign an superstar to a 3-year 15 mil contract with MLE... then give him a max contract when that is up, but

1) 3 years is a long time to make a fraction of the money you could be making just to play for a contender (hell, in 3 years they could possibly be contending where they are)

2) Its too big of a risk that the player could get injured in that 3 year span and never end up making the money they could have

I doubt it will ever happen

If teams could do it, they would.
If players really wanted to win over the money they make, they'd do it.

Not going to happen.

i love it when LA fans say "well [insert star player name] might choose LA and take the full MLE because think about all the extra exposure/endorsements he will get by playing in such a big market"

that always gives me a good giggle considering that it would never happen.

i didnt say that either to come to LA for extra endorsments, i didnt even say a team i was just sayin a player that wants to immediatly go to a championship team

Rick Fox, while not a max player, took significantly less money to sign with LA with the promise of a bigger contract later on. Fox wanted LA really badly because he wanted a championship ring and because he wanted to further increase his bad acting career.

If the well runs dry quickly in FA, maybe LA might lure a baller (with the MLE) who otherwise would've gotten more money other years. Atlanta, for example, doesn't have the cap space to sign a big name in the off season after the Bibby deal. That's one less team without cap space.
