Small markets start at a disadvantage, but that's where you need to build the culture, get creative, etc. I don't have a lot of profound things to say about this, I guess, except that it's possible to not end up as a backwater that no one wants to play for even if you aren't a major market.
Those boys in San Antonio have a half a century of sustained success and two decades straight of contention. And yeah a huge part of that was landing a superstar who didn't care about the big lights, but it also mattered that they found Manu late 2nd and Parker late 1st and Kawhi outside the lottery. That outside of Richard Jefferson they never made any major missteps and even that they fixed quickly.
