Not netting a top 5 pick in isolation. It's a pick downgrade, but the Pistons would be staying in the first half of the draft and acquiring a talent upgrade in Herro over Stewart. Detroit really suck, need shooting/spacing and to start winning some games.

Herro

Is a starting point. Perhaps they like someone like da Silva at 15 to plug in there? Who knows, they might target Miles Bridges (who went to Michigan State) in FA to give them some scoring punch in the frontcourt too.
The whole premise sounds so flawed and lopsided in our favor. They are already rumored to trade for THJ and his one year remaining which would then give the Mavs the ability to use the MLE. They will be compensated for that.
Again this sounds so unlikely and unrealistic that they would voluntarily take on Herro and his 30 mil and give up the 5th pick? If anything we would need to use the 15th pick as compensation for them taking him off our roster and thus getting us out of the tax. Addition by substation. The irony of talking about the Pistons needing to win games and trading for Herro is not lost here
The Pistons won 14 games last season. 17 the season before that.
You don't think adding Herro and another FA gets them some more wins and allows them to start building?
I get Herro is a polarising player, but he's not a scrub. He would help Detroit. They are equal dead last in the NBA in 3's per game, and Herro averages over 3 per game on good %.
Perhaps it is lopsided a bit in our favour, but Detroit isn't exactly a FA hotbed at the best of times, let alone when they're getting spanked every game. Herro being under contract for a few years actually could be perceived as a positive for them.
