Sadly one of mine died very suddenly recently, and it has been awful to put it mildly. I certainly never knew how much there was to do from a practical standpoint, and was fortunate to come home for weeks in order to help out and take the reigns on all the planning/finaggling/etc. that needed to be done, both for the services and the endless paperwork for life insurance/social security/consoldiating or canceling accounts, etc.

Now I am back on the west coast, but it has been a real bear not worrying about my remaining parent. They are very strong and tenacious, but it's been such a shock to the system for all of us. Definitely struggling with heavy senses of guilt for not living where my parents do, despite all the calls and skypes and texts (particularly during Bucks games). How have others handled all of the heaviness that comes with these types of things?

I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope all of their loving memories can help sustain you as you navigate through your grief. I think the advice that people have given about talking to someone about your grief and loss is excellent - I can't echo it enough.

Do you think it's possible to broach the subject of asking your remaining parent to move closer to you? I don't know if they have a busy career that keeps them occupied and makes it hard for them to leave, and if they have a nice social circle, they might not want to. And that makes sense. But I do think it is a bit easier when your remaining parent is someone who you can visit whenever you want or whenever they need without booking plane tickets and taking off from work. And if they say no, then they've made their choice and you can respect it and accept it.

Man, that would be the dream. She's retired now, and I have gently broached the subject a bit thus far. One of my siblings still lives in Milwaukee and my mom grew up there, most of all I think it would just be tremendously difficult for her to comport to such a radically-different environment after all these years in town (no matter how sick of the cold we can all get). I actually have a sort of wild job possibility in quite an unbelievable climate coming up, and my unfettered dream is to have her come with me for the winter months and return to the cream city when it's tolerable, e.g. April-September.

That would be wonderful, but of course, she is her own person and she can decide what she wants for herself. I know it's hard for anyone to tear up their lives and relocate to a new place without all of the familiar faces and things, especially for the older folks more settled into their ways. It took my dad so long to convince his father to move here after my grandmother passed away, but my grandfather knew what he knew and liked where he was. By the time he was ready to move, he passed away in his sleep literally 36 hours before his flight here. It was crushing, but at least he lived the life he wanted to have. Isn't that all we can ask for?

All you can do is make the suggestion and respect her wishes about it. To be honest, though, I think that if she spends one winter in a warm climate elsewhere, her antipathy about leaving Milwaukee will fade quite quickly. Perhaps all you need to do is fly her to your neck of the woods for a few weeks and see how she feels when she gets back to sub-freezing temps. Make it a little test run. I'm guessing she'll change her mind. :)

Badgers volleyball is playing Baylor on ESPN right now. Baylor has a girl with a 40+ inch vertical. It is ridiculous.

How's the weather there? Our country is on fire. Got to 45 (113) today and is still 40 (105) at 830.

No snow and we’re going to be around 50 on Monday so samesies basically.

Nice. A balmy 32 at 10 mins to 12pm

Also it was about 12 degrees 2 weeks ago here (50 something in weird measurements)

Let's play another round of What's Good?

I'll start. I know I asked you all a couple months ago about whether I should put my current employer down as a reference for a job I was applying for. I think all of you said no, but I ended up having to do it anyway.

I went through multiple interviews, and they gave me a heads up that they were going to call my references during my last one - "standard procedure" with their finalists. So, I gave her a heads up. She was gracious about it, even as I knew that she was, deep down, distressed that I could be leaving. She let me know the next day that she got the reference call, as did the rest of my references.

But then a week went by.

And another.

And another.

And I started to feel that deep sinking feeling that things didn't work out.

And then, BOOM! I got a call earlier this week from that potential employer, explaining that the reason for the delay was related to getting budget approval. They made an offer this week that was for a salary that was about 50% MORE than I thought it was going to be. I accepted in a heartbeat.

It hasn't quite hit me yet, and I know I'm going to get progressively more nervous as I approach the start date in a month. But right now, I'm just sort of shocked by it all. I told my folks and they were so excited for me. It's nice when you can make your loved ones proud.

If you're thinking about looking for a new job, now's the time to do so. The market is really favorable.

Hey, congrats dude! Getting a job offer and finding out they're giving you the money you want is up their with the best feelings in the world.

Not a lot has gone right over the last few months for me, to be honest.

I guess some stuff I can point to that have boosted my mood is a picture I got from my sister in law of my little five year old niece playing Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night with my brother. He played it so much and the two little girls loved watching him do it, that the five year old picked it up and now she's hooked. I laughed a lot at that.

I enjoyed the latest season of the expanse and it got me to dive into the fifth novel in the series and it's so freaking good.

I'm very much not looking forward to the coming holidays and it's going to be a struggle to get to January. Thankfully I'll have family for help.

I've scored huge points with our company's CEO lately, working on weekends when it's just me and her doing so. She made a comment commending me last weekend and I told her to remember that when my boss retires because I want his job.

I feel healthier than I have in the last year after getting about a month's head start on NY's resolutions.

Thanks, man. It sounds like you've had a lot of nice things going on. I'm sorry that you're not looking forward to the holidays, but hopefully they'll move by quickly and your family will give you the support you need. Don't forget your RGM family, too. I'm here if you ever need to talk.

So many things I love about Japan, but I just can't get over the sneaking suspicion they are very racist and sexist. I might be doing them injustice because I don't know the language and I am a million miles from really understanding their culture but it's a criticism they get a lot and it bothers me.

I'm not gonna do this unless there are at least five others here who are willing to try this with me.

When I was a teen in study hall I got busted laughing reading Dan Jenkins novels. Didn't drink back then, but this was my first description of how to kill a hangover and it's stuck with me for 20 years. It's from his novel Rude Behavior:

First, Tommy Earl said, you hit the hangover with scrambled eggs and a double order of Owens patty sausage. Follow that up with biscuits and cream gravy. Three biscuits, large bowl. Keep the sorry son of a bitch - the hangover - off balance with an enchilada omelette, side of corned beef hash, and a waffle with maple syrup. Drink several glasses of milk - real milk, not that 1 percent piss for heart patients. Lay in as many cups of coffee as you can hold. Throw about four Advil at it for good measure. Then while it deals with all that, let it worry about the possibility of getting hit with more biscuits and gravy while you smoke half a pack of Winstons.

"Teach the motherf***** a lesson he won't forget today".

It seems impossible and irreparable damaging to your body. I don't even smoke. But I still want to try it some morning.

Are there any brave souls here who want to give this a shot, maybe in a month or two. WHO'S COMING WITH ME?

I've heard the same, but in my experience, everyone was incredibly nice and polite. They do have women only cars on the subway during busy times to prevent issues with groping and such, but I feel like that makes sense anywhere with a busy subway system.

My hangovers are weird in that I feel sick to my stomach and can’t eat, so this would be instant vomit for me.

You'll be so miserable from those cigarettes. I would say cut those out and keep it at one cup of good coffee and it sounds pretty good.

I feel like you'd be better off smoking something else that helps with your appetite instead of cigarettes.

This comes from a guy who quit smoking a few years ago. I used to love the coffee + cig routine after a nice breakfast. I miss it from time to time, but my lungs are grateful for my choice.
