We sure we watched the same trilogy? Fellowship sure, I think the technological limitations were there at the time and a big deal was made about how much they shot on location in New Zealand for the first two. But Return of the King felt like it was basically made entirely in front of a green screen lol.
I think the series looks promising. You know Amazon has poured a ton of money into it for the production values, and the cast looks pretty decent. I know nothing about the more obscure LOTR lore and stories so it won't feel too forced or unnecessarily drawn out like the rather awful Hobbit movies.
I mean CGI characters, like the orc villains in The Hobbit for instance. All of the orc characters in The Trilogy were costumes and makeup.
Obviously, there is a ton of CGI and miniatures for the massive armies, cities, trolls, etc. Basically, they used CGI for the things they HAD to use it for. Now it feels like directors cut corners for everything with CGI and it looks terrible.
People had the same angry things to say about Peter Jackson and the original trilogy before it aired. Also, everyone still has a horrible taste in their mouth from Game of Thrones.
CGI in Thrones was mostly fantastic, it was writing that ran it into the ground. It's when you start having legit characters with dialogue in CGI, it just cheapens everything.
The bad taste in my mouth is The Hobbit, but apparently they literally just ran out of time figuring out Azog the Defiler and had to do a digital creature in post.
