It's all convoluted right now, but I'll keep it simple:
Carmelo needs a "vocal leader" superstar alongside him who he knows, and who relishes being a vocal leader, and that's Amare. It's a natural fit chemistry wise.
It all comes down to what is Carmelo's best career move: make sure he ends up on a team where he can win now and contend for a championship over the long term. Sure, the 3 yr. extension money would be icing on the cake, but he still needs to make the best overall career decision for himself and his family.
It might be hard for him to accept, but Carmelo can't really avoid becoming a "villain" in Denver unless he stays there. I know Amare just got a warm greeting in Phoenix, but that's a different scenario.
