Yeah but did you learn that from watching “yo mtv raps” or “the box?” My mom was pissssed when she got the phone bill.

I learned it from having the tape...

Image

The Box was a good time. And that video was lit, as the kids say. VA beach bikini spring break.

I may not be NYC enough for this thread because I was born/raised 212, but my first tape was a bootleg single of Young MC “Bust a Move” purchased from an African dude selling tapes off a blanket on 86th and Lex. The same gentleman also sold me the first hardcore porn VHS I’d ever seen, but I’d been pretty desensitized from Robyn Bird and Al Goldstein of channel J (then channel 23, then finally channel 35).

My idea of a balanced diet was washing down my dirty water dog with a Welch’s grape or Sunkist. Fanta if I was feeling fancy.

I once won a call-in Knicks trivia contest on Channel 1’s midnight sports show (can’t remember the name), and they sent me to f*cking Chicago to watch game 2 of the ‘92 playoffs at the old Chicago arena and stay in the same hotel as the Knicks. I saw Ewing in the lobby and he refused to sign an autograph or even take a picture. I shared an elevator with Oak the night before the game (a Sunday matinee), and he had a white girl on each arm (the knicks lost, Jordan scored 52).

Also fun fact: 90% of all phone numbers I have memorized right now are landlines beginning in 212 or 718 from the years 1984-1996.

Can I get a ticket to this game?

Grew up in South Jamaica, and it was always special when we went to PlayLand in Rockaway Beach. Was so disappointed when they tore the place down.

I remember the block parties, playing two-hand touch football with the light poles as the end zones. Even Knick tickets were affordable. I can only catch knick games in Orlando or Atlanta now. I miss my old New York

I would not even know. it was to see new jack city since we could not get tickets since we was so young.I just remember coming thru the back exit from when people was coming out the previous show. I was just visiting my cousin in QU so you would have to tell me

Yeah, you basically went right after the shootout. A kid got bodied in there. Before the shootout if you snuck in there you could rock out and watch movies all day.

After the shootout, they out mad cameras, metal detectors, and strict pat-downs and ID so all free for all wit sneaking in and rocking out was dead after that.

You went in that gap right after the murder but right before they installed all the new cams and detectors.

Yeah I just googled it and it happened on christmas and New Jack City was the first week of march so it make sense. Must have been the last window of opportunity.

I remember him saying that we had to leave a little bit early from the film to sneak into another show so I guess it must have been real sweet in that theater at one time to bounce around.

Somebody mentioned VA Beach and Wrexx.

VA Beach was lit for July 4th weekend and Memorial Beach weekend. Ran so many trains on chicks down there back then

If you from the streets you know the NY-VA connection was the pipeline if you was moving work or making music. Nuff said...

But Teddy, Wrexx and the whole fam was peoples. Ty Fyffe too, who was originally from Southside (Jamaica). Met Pharrell out there too. At the time he was just a quiet lame getting jerked by Teddy

My brothers was the first to bring Ron G and Biggie out to VA. And to send Cuda up north to Harlem.

But back to the real fun chit...

• Greak Fest at Jones Beach
• Freaknik ATL
• VA Beach (July 4th/Memorial/Labor Day weekends)

This has me thinking...imagine if the Knicks offered a night for *real* New Yorkers. The ones who understand the culture called and pulse of the 4 boroughs - not just Manhattan - and called it NYC NIGHT.

• You need to show your birth certificate to get in on NYC Night.

• Or you need to pass a "growing up in NYC" trivia to be able to get in on NYC Night.
