This is good.. we've never had enough of this. The NBA has changed.. it's not about giving the ball to one guy to bail you out anymore.

Adam Zagoria ‏@AdamZagoria 44s
Phil says he wants to see 'ball movement and player movement with a purpose.'

This is good also.. I've been talking about positive player movement for years now. And the way the triangle operates it's positive player movement toward the basket... another thing we've never had in an offense.

He's challenging Melo's character here.. publicly. If Phil's tenure here was truly reliant on whether or not he can get Melo to re-sign he wouldn't have done this.

[tweet]https://twitter.com/HerringWSJ/status/458990725250953216[/tweet]

This one was rather obvious.. even if the league hadn't changed somewhat with regards to teams playing small a lot Shumpert and Harper are two different types of players.. Harper was cool, composed and collected whereas Shump tends to be erratic.

[tweet]https://twitter.com/Al_Iannazzone/status/458993310653509632[/tweet]

And this (the full quote) is a little bit of Phil letting it be known he's not going to beg Carmelo Anthony to stay Which is what I thought from the first press conference and he's trying to make Carmelo feel like he'd be missing out on something good if he left. This was typical Phil Jackson right here.

This is like poker, you don't want to show your hand. If other teams see that Phil wants to keep Melo, and then Melo still wants to leave, they'd throw every low-ball offer at us because we would be desperate, like we were when we first got him.

Phil doesn't want that to happen and is "okay" with keeping him or not.

both you and kg are right. this is just a negotiation tactic.

I'll grant you that.

The discussion I was referencing wasn't "who is who's daddy though." The discussion was whether Mr. Jackson's earlier comments meant they were in on Melo at all costs. He does want Melo on HIS team.

You may forget - I actually like Melo. But my position is that NO player should ever have the kind of power that he did in this org.

No argument there. I've been saying the same thing basically.

Phil knows the quickest route to contention is keeping Melo at a reasonable price.

He's prepared to move forward if that isn't in the cards though

Knicks made the trade. Could have said no. Blame the Knicks.

Yeah this is not about anybody sticking anything to Melo. He wants to be a Knick, or at least he did, and he wants to win.

Phil is, however, pointedly raising it again in public. But that's not to get into it with Melo or pull rank -- it's to start negotiating with him. Phil represents the Knicks and Melo represents Melo. It's a negotiation. Phil is putting down a marker.

And Phil knows that in this case, it's not about saving money so much as it is about building a great team. And that's something Melo says he wants too. Phil is not going to shy away from holding Melo to it. That's all there really is here.

Right all Phil is basically saying is I have a plan. Achieving that plan would be easier with Melo but I will still achieve my plan without him.

Didn't read this whole thread but did Phil squash Asshola's story about him and Dolan being at odds?

KnicksGod wrote:Funny how the media slurps the Bulls. I know they had a good regular season (so did we a year ago) and have a great coach.

But if it were the Knicks and the situation was reversed, the media would say: 'They have a horrible offense, don't belong in the playoffs, and their only hope is a point guard who is having terrible knee injuries at an early age. Melo would be crazy to go there!'

Etc.

Because New York media and Chicago media are not comparable.

ORANGEandBLUE wrote:People are dubious about Melo taking less for the good of the team because he's been so adamant about opting out.

I honestly think Melo had no intention of leaving the Knicks. He just wanted to be wined and dined ala Dwight Howard. He wanted to be a hero but the narrative has changed

Coming into the season this was his plan:
>Have a competitive season like last year
>Opt out with fans begging for him back
>Meet with other teams
>Take a paycut (20 Mil) and sign a long deal with the Knicks.
>Win or Lose fans love him cause he shows he is about winning

Now the narrative is like this:
>Terrible season
>Fans still want Melo, not at Kobe-Max
>Here comes Phil
>If Melo takes a paycut it will look like Phil made him his b*tch, even if Melo intended to all along

I honestly think Melo had this thought out long in advanced. Especially for his image in New York, he wants to be seen as a winner. His brand is worth more than the extra million he would receive taking the Kobe-Max. You don't want to be on a long term deal in NY when people hate you.

Losing Melo without compensation is totally fine too. Gets you all that cap room in 2015, not filled up by any prospects who may or may not work out, and it also gets you a tank for next season ... when you can get a top 5 pick that is more likely to work out. Losing him for nothing is not a disaster in my eyes. Not with Phil commanding the ship.

Wait...

Realgm told me that at some point during February 2011 Melo overtook the Knick's front office in some type of basketball coup d'état and forced the organization to trade for himself at all costs.

Why would you lie to me Realgm?

I'd like to see the look on Melo's face when Phil offers him 4 years, 80 million, and he realizes he's not the man anymore.

OT but it's funny how Isola wrote that Dolan wouldn't lose a second of sleep about all the blood at MSG during his secret coup to hire Phil ... but then writes today that Dolan is going to bat for lower-level employees. Hah. That's the mark of a BS artist -- total contradictions left and right.

I would like to see the look on your face when he actually signs that deal and is on the team for the rest of his career.
