Well yeah. Nobody wants to play there. Dudes might play inspired to get off that team. We can buy low on disgruntled players
I was at a game at MSG in spring 2019 and Fox absolutely busted the Knicks ass scored 30 something I don’t remember and of course the Kings won. He seemed like he would thrive under the lights of the garden to me.
But whatever let’s develop some g-leaguer or hope the next late 1st rounder becomes a star. A boat’s a boat but a mystery box can be anything. It can even be a boat. You know how much we wanted one of those.
The best teams in this league built through the draft.
They didn't trade all their assets for 'disgruntled' volume scorers and hoped that they can make a first round playoff berth.
The nets are the best team in the league. They had nothing, they traded a first round pick for d’Angelo russell a disgruntled volume scorer on LA, he became an all-star, they made a first round playoff birth barely over .500, then KD and Kyrie came and they traded for harden
Meanwhile in that same time span we “built through the draft” like a small market poverty franchise and got Frank Knox and nothing. They play in the same city we do. We could have done the same thing.
I knew when I made the post you would jump right to the Nets. Really another overly simplistic way to look at something.
The Nets traded Jarrett Allen and Levert + picks to get Harden. Those are guys they drafted and developed. The Nets are also essentially the last team to building through free agency. That doesn't happen anymore. Superstars do not make big moves in free agency anymore.
And the most important note of all - we've tried the free agency route for the better part of a decade. It hasn't worked. Nobody wants to sign here with Dolan running the show.
The Bulls were built primarily through good trades but they had a major signing in Derozan which turned out even better than even the most positive expected it to turn out. However the Bulls ceiling isn't high. They traded 2 firsts for Vucevic so they have to win in the next 3 seasons or they're a bust.
Every team at the top of the conference - Warriors, Bucks, Suns, Grizzlies, Jazz - and even the good teams like 76ers, Cavaliers, Hornets, Raptors, Nuggets, Timberwolves, etc - built through the draft and trades.
We've never built through the daft. We have always half-assed every rebuild. Having terrible decision makers like Perry/Mills draft Frank and Knox should not be the reason why you don't build through the draft. It's an incredibly shortsighted and slanted way to look at the situation.
