No, exempt list players can either keep their current contracts or lose a year on their contracts depending on the teams choice. EL players default to a "frozen" contract if nothing is done by the team. So in Jackson's case, if you do nothing he will still be on your roster next year. If you want him to be a FA then you would need to PM me saying that you want a year off of his contract.
Ok thanks for clarifying. If I do decide to “freeze him” and keep him on my roster next year, would his contract count against my cap?
Also can I use the $8 he’s making to make salaries work in a trade? Just trying to see if there would be any benefit to keeping him around.
If you freeze him his contract would count just as it did this year. If he is still EL eligible next season you would have an $8 hit on your cap which would be offset if you had a player on your roster making $8 or less on a one year deal. You would basically get an exemption for his salary but only for a player on a one year contract.
If you freeze his contract, he will remain on your books for next year. EL players are eligible to be traded just as any player you hold the rights to as long as neither team violates the salary cap in the trade. However, no trade can be accepted or official until after the EL deadline passes. So basically, you can freeze him if you have a deal in place but if the deal falls through, then he would remain on your roster going into next season.
