The Knicks might look at THJ as a younger, cheaper, less good way to replace some of the scoring load Melo carried.

You can throw in a surplus of cash for him being restricted, still young and on the upswing last year.

Am I supportive of it? Not really no. But I'm explaining it. The reasoning is not crazy but it WILL SEEM crazy if he goes back to being sucky.

All about the future and how good he will be.

KCP is imo on the same level as Timmy. I doubt he gets a 70 mil deal. Shoulda waited a little more, Mills.

KCP is a nice defender but kinda overrated. Think Hardaway is a better fit

Slightly more than what the Hawks were willing to pay. if they match, so be it. Timmy wouldn't have been my choice for using any of the Knicks cap space though.

Lol we don't know what the Hawks we're willing to pay. It's pure speculation. Sure you can say Hawks thought he was worth 48M but you can't say with any reasonable certainty how much was their cut off was to match.

I think Tony Snell got 48M, Timmy is a much better player.

If he gets anything close to 70 mil I will gladly agree. I suspect he wont.

Think a lot of us are 50/50 on this. We see the upside and downside.

He does fit well with our young core, and can still get better. If he wasnt on this team (namely his second year) people would be thinking differently about this methinks.

I remember last summer when half this board was on Allan Crabbe's nuts.

How dare you play word games with me (old married couple outrage). He won't replace him but they're worried about scoring with Melo being shown the door. For $18M, so about 70% or whatever of what Melo makes, THJ can carry about 50-70% of the scoring burden Melo carried.

Tanking for KP, Willy sounds good and could work, but it could also start to seriously regress their ability to play basketball with some effectiveness on the court.

It's something I thought about too. He's got a history here already so it's impacting the way people see him and the contract.

Score at an ok percentage, don't pass much and play little D.

I think he can do that.

timmy has never played the number one option role. that was milsap. it's a lot harder than it looks. in general, not just you, i don't think people really appreciate the talent that melo has for scoring. my hope is that kp has developed enough that he can do what you are expecting timmy to do and carry that burden. because timmy is not really built for it. it would be like making jr smith your number one option.

My larger point is I think the financials of it are actually overrated, as nutty as that first sounds.

Meaning: If he keeps his game moving forward as he did last season, then whether we paid him $18M or $20M, people will be happy ... and rightfully so.

If he reverts to form, then $12M won't hide that. Nobody would want him in a trade and we will get our pitchforks back out. Wait, we've never really put them away.

If I had a gun to my head, I'd bet on him reverting to crappy form, not moving forward. But either way, the little bit more or less cash is almost besides the point.

When Walsh said a player is good at one number but not another, I don't think that really applies to guys like THJ. He's a boom or bust type of player. At the same time, the key to him is efficiency and not blocking out KP and Willy by chucking. It's a major assignment he's got and a big and difficult role he has to fill. I'm not at all convinced he's up to it but his numbers from last season definitely give you some hope.

I actually agree with this and was typing a long post similar to yours.
