People rather draft Duarte who’s 24 years old with minimal upside

Whoever we draft has like a 2 percent chance at being close to Sexton. We get too attached to our picks even the scrubs.

That part... and sending away assets (any, particularly a 1st) hurts our chances to trade for a real star. It's not rocket science

And what if the FO feels like Sexton can be that “real star”? I mean the talent, youth and potential are there..

But his play hasn't shown the ability to make others around him better and that's what real stars do! Is he young enough to change? Sure! But history isn't on his side

We can then trade Sexton if Quickley is putting up 24 ppg by year 3.. good problem to have. Tangible assets and not just middling picks

What real star is even in the market? We really only have until July 25th to make a trade anyways. As soon as we use these picks on a player they lose a lot of value. Teams prefer the mystery box of the draft pick. If we get lucky and the player we draft ends up as good as IQ it could help us but that’s usually a rare find in the back half of the draft. So unless a star asks out between the end of the season and before the draft I don’t think it’s wasting an asset.

it's not about age, it's about how many years guys have on their rookie deal. thats why Cleveland is trading him in the first place. thats why SGA doesn't fit okc's timeline. teams aren't ready to pay these guys. has nothing to do with whether a guy is 22 vs 24 years old.
give me four chances in the next two years to evaluate a kid for four years vs one season to decide whether a guy is worth 150 mil.
sexton is worth one pick and some flotsam and jetsam in my world.

I like IQ… but Sexton was much better.

Sexton averaged 16.7 PPG 3 APG on 43/40/83 splits

IQ averaged 11 PPG 2 APG on 39/39\89 splits

Sexton was also 19 years old. IQ is 22.

To all the Knicks fans who hate upgrades:

Does Lonzo make us a better team? No.
Does Kendrick Nunn make us a better team? No.
Does Devonte Graham make us a better team? No.

If you have a chance to get a 24 pt/gm scoring guard on good efficient numbers (51/37/81) by only trading bench players and 1 of our mid 1sts, you do it and don't look back. The same people who don't want a 22 year old improving player to succeed under Thibs are the same people who were questioning RJ Barrett's upside. Pitiful. Y'all should stop hugging mediocre players, and take the upgrades. EVERY TIME.

And they’ll be asking for IQ and our picks from 2022 and 2023. we need to hope that we hit on our two remaining picks to sweeten the pot cuz unless the team is rebuilding they may not want just some random kids.

appears to be an option is how he put it. i don't think the knicks should offer more than that unless it's a 2nd or something like that.

the deal itself is a steal. once you pay him though ? maxing out both randle & sexton the same summer is horrific and dooms the team to mediocrity. i think at that point they both become contracts that nobody really wants and so you either keep them for 4 years or play the trade one bad contract for another game. it's a fate worse than death or sharing a pizza with melo and thinking you'll get more than 1 slice before he eats the rest of the pizza.

That is the tough part for the Knicks. Sexton really shrinks their cap window and paying Randle/Sexton/RJ alone isnt enough. So from the Knicks point of view, its tough to see them giving up a lot more.

But for other teams that are capped out Sexton makes a ton of sense and could be very valuable. Sounds like a bunch of other teams are interested. That is where it gets tricky cause Knicks will have to beat their offer....some teams like Miami may be willing to take on Love's contract

This is the part where I said the Knicks might overpay, where another team threatens to "get involved" and then it costs more - in fact, I think Obi and a #1 and Knox is already a bit too much.

Also, and this would negate the things I've said about Knicks going after Lonzo to pair with Sexton OR trading for Sexton/Love to reduce the cost, is that K-Dot pointed out one of the appeals for the Knicks about getting Sexton is that he'd enable them to have a window to get a max cat before Sexton and Randle themselves became max cats.

Though of course it's arguable that a group of those max cats is as appealing as the movie Cats

Yes because to be fair Lonzo averaged 7.0 assists in 2019-2020 during a year where rookie Zion only played 24 games.

Let's not pretend that Zion is the reason for Ball bring a great passer. Kid went 2nd overall out of UCLA due to passing alone...

zion is one of the best paint finishers in the league today and lonzo's assists essentially stayed the same/went down when he plays with him. what does that tell you

lonzo is not a great passer. he was drafted because he showed passing/playmaking talent in college. It hasn't translated into the nba
It also shows that teams just pack the paint against Zion and he creates mostly for himself which is why they put the ball in his hands and Lonxo's 3 pt shooting exploded.

Lol @ the pizza, but just imagine us having maxed out both Sexton and Randle.... good Lord

realistically, it's unlikely that any of those guys will be a top 10 player. will one even be a top 15 player ? maybe rj or sex will get there, i don't see it, but maybe. and that's a best case scenario. will that ever be good enough ? no. so you need a trade for a real star still and you'd have to give up the rest of your assets to do that. is a team built around top 10 player, randle & sexton good enough ? maybe if there's another pandemic. otherwise, nope.

Not you, and I'm not totally sold on Sexton either, but what are people hoping will happen here?

In no particular order, here are the players who aren't "good enough" for them:

Sexton
Ball
DeRozan
Fournier
And a bunch of others

While I see "Lowry or Conley for 2 years would be great!" and
"Well, we are going to get LaVine"
"OKC will trade us OKC for a bag of chips"

I mean, it's this constant "player X isn't good enough" or some unrealistic trade for a guy the Knicks don't have a shot at, or a very long shot at.

And Lowry and Conley will get 2 years, and then the Knicks are maxing out Randle & RJ and Mitch might get paid and there won't be any money anyway.

So, what is the get people are looking for?

That Graham might be cheaper?
2 years of Dunn?
Draft 3 guys from 19-32?
