for the magic, this trade can only be listed as a lateral move. it doesn't significantly upgrade our sf position since we have 3 players from last year's squad that can arguably fill in that position come game time.
also, the magic stand to lose too much for this deal. not to bash deng, i really think he's a fantastic player to have, but i wouldn't trade gortat alone to get him - much less add pietrus in the mix. we have a more pressing need for a big body to back up dwight. its hard to come by quality bigs in today's league. just looking at the draft, you can see the surplus of wing players as opposed to big men. much easier to find a diamond in the rough than to get a player that we would really need.
like most have said already, we can find a better trade for gortat. his contract is just right for a team looking for a starting center. if i was otis, i wouldn't jump the gun on trading marcin...
are you serious? The pressing need is a backup? I was all for getting a PF like Bosh or Boozer, but if that doesnt happen, the next thing needed is a wing player that is very good. Deng is very good. He can be a 20/10 player in this system. He can play pick and roll with Nelson, is active, good on fast breaks, has a great mid range game that the team lacks right now. It is either Dwight or bombs away from 3 pt land. And Gortat was a development player. At #29, we could draft another big guy, and pick up someone like Battie to help fill in the minutes.
People may not like Dengs contract, but it isnt as bad as Lewis, and he can be more productive and he is only 25. The contract only goes for about 4 more years, he would be 29, still a great age for a SF.
As for a formidable front court, it has yet to be seen if Noah can play for long periods of time at PF and we also dont know how Gortat would last playing every night with full time minutes. Dont forget, Gortat is not exactly an offensive juggernaut either.. Cmon people, dont overrate our players. Pitrus came to us as a defensive specialist and has turned into Bombs Away France. Name someone he has defended lately and done a good job on? Gortat was a project that couldnt even make the 15 man roster 3 years ago.
