I was one that wasn’t much of a fan. I didn’t hate him but wanted an upgrade. He had 1 great year (2008-2009) but other than that, he was pretty average at best. The numbers always looked good but I felt like we needed something else to unlock more of what Dwight gave us on offense.
Truth to be told, 2007-2011 ish era of NBA didn't have many strong point guards.
Top tear: Chris Paul, Parker ,Billups, Rose,Nash, Derron Williams and after that you would have Rondo, Jameer, probably Kidd, young Westbrook but that's kind a it. Andre Miller, Calderon, declining Baron Davis & Arenas who dropped off cliff at age of 26 , Iverson who retired in 2010 etc.
Very strange era for PGs.
Few days ago i was in some nonsense GB debate about Lebron vs Jordan and "level of talent " that was allegedly so much worst in 90s. And upon wasting time looking at rosters my grand conclusion was that 2004-2012-ish era was very talentless. Especially if you move away from usual top 15-18 players that would make allstar game ( with occesional pops of wtf names like Chris Kaman , Cassell,Maglorie , Roy Hibbert etc )
Diving into some random 2006-07 you would have Boozer getting MVP votes, Bargnani comming 2# for ROY ( after being 1# pick), 35 years old Bruce Bowen breaking ankles on his way to 2# in DPOY votes behind " I don't play defense any more, now i just block shots " Marcus Camby, who "anchored" 11th best defense that ,btw had Melo & AI and lost in playoffs in 5 games, to Spurs.
Spurs were so dominant that year in particular that they only lost 3 playoff games.
When you figure that out, it's not hard to understand that Nelson was probably top 10 player at his position, top 15 at worst.
In today's perspective, top 15 PG is probably Harden/Lamelo/ Holiday/ Garland

Guards nowdays are sooo damn good. They benefited from perimeter oriented offense and less physicality on defense more than anybody else.
