We could easily zig when everyone thought we would zag.
We hardly discuss center or 2 guard upgrades, we’re all talking Sexton/Garland/Simons but could be interested in KAT/Cam Thomas kind of players…
We really don’t know what this FO is thinking.
Every year we assume the obvious but they always tend to do the opposite.
Acquiring KCP before a point guard meant he believed one of two things…
That Paolo/Franz are lead ball handlers/ distributors OR that Jalen Suggs can actually be a point guard for lack thereof.
Both of which aren’t true and now he knows his gamble didn’t pay off. So he’s either going to make a desperation trade with Suggs or he’s going to go for a double with a Simons/Sexton fill in.
Yeah but neither one are really PG’s. Sexton is one by size only. I don’t see a huge difference between him and Cole tnh. Maybe more efficient?
It’s about consistency IMO. The entire reason Cole cannot be a starter is that he’s not consistent enough offensively to offset the fact that he gets targeted on defense.
Sexton and Simon’s might not be even average defenders but they have a skill set that keeps defenses honest at least from outside.
Pairing two 3/D defensive minded SG’s in the back court means leaning on Franz and Paolo more than any true offense rightfully should as distributors. They aren’t those guys.
It’s just wild to me that the answer here to finally getting a legitimate guard to pair with Suggs involves trading Suggs. Like Weltman was so out of options that he couldn’t merely find a starter and needed an allstar in exchange for a 23 year old all defense guy.
