one side sees him as underrated by most accounts, a guy who does it all, fills the stat sheet and is a solid part of the future going forward
others see a guy who is about to get paid who has yet to avg more than 20 ppg but will get paid like a guy who is supposed too with little regard to the other things he does
both sides have characteristics about iggy which are true and prevalent and combined tell the whole story
imo, iggy is what a 9th overall pick should be...a solid nba starter who can look real good at times but for the most part is consistant and solid...he is where his developement should...now i think in our rebuilding effort, we as fans want something to grasp and hold onto to say the future is bright...and since we really didnt get it in the iverson trade, we lean on iggy which isnt fair...hes a nice player but he isnt a franchise guy...he isnt even a pippen..hes a good basketball player and thats it...we need to accept that he is above average but our hopes and feelings shouldnt be too tied into him bc we havent rebuilt quite right yet...at some point soon, we will have that young franchise guy and then we can get behind him, whether its in this draft, through rfa, or via a guy already on roster (thad maybe?)...
until then lets accept iggy for what he is and not have these unreal expectations and feelings...he can be traded but he is our best trade chip right now...no reason to just get rid of him for the sake of doing it...
Strong post. I agree with much of what you are saying.
A few things- as SendEm pointed out- if we take your view we have to be careful not to overpay Iguodala. Fortunately he's only coning off his rookie contract to he can't get crazy Rashard Lewis money. Also, I doubt there will be other cpmpetition to drive up his price.
Given solid role players like Noccioni make 8M, I think we will be O.K. if we end up starting at 9.5M ( that will average our to be about 5yr/53M after yearly raises.)
Also, I think you (and most people) overrate draft picks. Iguodala is easily one of the better #9 picks in the last 20 years. Most end up being poor if not marginal NBA players. Here is a good list/analysis of players draftered at each pick:
http://www.82games.com/nbadraft2.htm You can see Iguodala is much better than the average #9 pick (Rodney Rogers and Joel Joel Pyrzibilla.)
Similarly, to compare him to Pippin is unfair. I realize the similarity in their games, but Pippen is the gold standard, the best Robin ever- and was choses as a top 50 all time, HOF player. You can be a good complementary star on a contender without being anywhere near the level of a Pippin. I see Iguodala as being a bit better than a Sean Elliot in his prime, who was the #3 star on a great Spurs team
