The Okafor situation has been frustrating, and the Embiid injury wasn't handled right, but the good moves he's made need to be considered. He had a really good draft, made a nice trade for Ersan and a 1st, and the team is actually getting respect. While I would rather have Hinkie, I dont think BC has done anything worth being fired over.
Moves he's made? His value was supposed to be in bringing in free agents and agent contacts that Hinkie couldn't and he brought in Bayless (a terrible contract for a guy that shot way above expectation last season and was far from the best fit with Simmons among players available), Rodriguez (meh), and Henderson (who has been fine but certainly isn't something special that Hinkie couldn't have done). The Ersan trade was good value but I'm going to save the praise until I see whether he moves him at the deadline (it's terrible if he doesn't).
His draft was alright. He doesn't get any credit for the Simmons pick - everyone in the league is making that. The Luwawu pick was certainly very good (I had him as second best player available after McCaw). The Korkmaz pick was alright (had him as probably top 5 best available).
However, he gets an F for not handling the Okafor/Noel situation over the summer (aka not trading Okafor for whatever he could get over the summer), and another F for how he's handled Okafor over the last week.
He gets an F for more or less lying about the Embiid and Simmons injury situations and then throwing Embiid under the bus for dancing at the concert.
He gets an F for not communicating with Noel and even letting the situation get to that point (again by not trading Okafor sooner).
He's jeopardizing the relationships with our best players (Embiid, Simmons, Noel).
I actually had respect for Colangelo for his draft but that respect is completely gone after the events of the last few months (especially the last week). I was legitimately excited to listen to Hinkie on the rare occasions he decided to speak and I couldn't be bothered to listen to anything Colangelo "says" - he's just a politician.
I'm not going to sit here and defend the guy more than I have because I never wanted him, but the reality is that people want him fired over what has transpired over the last month, and thats not how things work in the world. If thats not understood, then IDK what world people work in.
You can give him an "F" for all those things, but thats just media relations and things that people choose to turn into big deals you don't know are true. Like, no one has any proof that relationships with Embiid and Simmons are jeopardized. You think they are but Embiid or Simmons aren't refusing to sign a contract over something like that. So, yes these things BC has done recently are annoying, but the bottomline is that the team is improving.
