Joel Embiid is currently overweight and out of shape. He needs to lose about 10-15 lbs. Hopefully that occurs naturally as the season goes along. Of course, he still provides superstar impact even when he's clearly not at his best.

He is currently 8 pounds heavier than he was last year at 283 instead of 275.

That is hardly enough to call him “overweight”, I mean he isn’t fat. He just isn’t in peak shape.

He stamina is still rounding into form, and as long as he stays healthy I think that he will naturally get down to that weight in the next couple of months.

Brown said in the post game interview that Joel is at 70% of his fitness level.

I can believe it. I think Joel said something similar recently.

He was only cleared for 5 on 5 a week or two before the season started.

No 8 lbs is a lot. In fact it is more than 8 lbs because he should be closer to 265 or 270 instead of 275 like he was last year. That means he IS overweight. I didn't say he was "fat" so don't set up a straw man.

For him to be at peak performance he needs to slim down, period.

Brown wants him to be 275 according to a recent interview, and I think that that is perfect.

He is 7’2 after all. That is lighter than Cousins and Drummond and he is 3-4 inches taller than them.

Whatever he was in January last year is what he needs to be. He just looks so slow and lumbersome at the moment.

Maybe it's the increased minutes doing that. He has gone from 16 min games last year looking spry to playing 30 mins the other night. Seems like his cardio is completely up to s#@t and that has less to do with weight. You can be overweight and still have good cardio.

Brett Brown also made a point that with the reduced time outs this year he can't give Embiid as many short rests as he'd like simply because he has less timeouts to use.

I think that 7-10 pounds heavier, and not being fully in shape is sufficient to explain that.

The only argument that holds any water with me on wanting him to lose weight is the health impact on his legs. The ability to play basketball physically argument doesn’t hold water with me because I believe that he is faster than who he needs to be, and stronger than who he needs to be.

He just hasn’t caught his wind fully yet. When not tired he is the physical specimen that he was last year.

He'll get up to speed. This is basically still preseason for him. Scary to think about.

After hearing Brett Brown on the podcast below I am not too worried about Joel.

With Joel the whole thing is going to be based on how soon we can get him to the fitness level he wants and that we are comfortable at. I am blown away that we have been able to play him this much, this frequently this early. I did not expect that and his body has been great.

well hes not overweight or out of shape by any means but Joel needs to lose some weight to regain some speed and agility..
can't help to say that after looking at how Porzingis is playing

In the last post game interview Brett said he was at about 70 percent of his fitness.

JoJo out vs. Jazz due to "load management" according to the team. We haven't played since Friday. Richaun gonna get buckets tomorrow?

Strategically it makes the most sense for him to sit out the tougher game and play the easier one if its a situation where he can only play one game.. Wish they were greedy. We can beat Utah with Joel and beat Sac without him.

Yeah why not rest him vs Golden State or the Clippers?

This is suspicious.

After reading on reddit one thing a poster mentioned that made sense is the altitude in Utah.

It’s so we can get a better idea of the impact Simmons can make without Embiid lol. Just kidding.

Return to Philadelphia 76ers
