Basically if I have some connection, however created, then I cheer that team on. For example, when Zidane was playing I cheered for France. Favourite player back then.
Italy's always fun to watch for the drama when they get fouled (they're not the only ones. Other teams have learned lol).
That time Zidane went berserk and rammed his head into the Italian player's chest
Brazil always seems to have incredible dribbling and passing skills.
Also fun to see which underdog rises to strike down a Goliath.
Brazil and Portugal are the only undefeated teams so far, I think. We'll see how long it lasts.
I'd like to see England or France win with Poland somewhere in a surprise mix. Seems like it's Lewandowski's last WC so it would be nice to see him get some success. Of course Poland and France play each other in the next round so... tall task, but not insurmountable. So many supposed great teams have been caught so far.
Oh, I didn't know you lived in Canada. I thought that you lived in Texas, because of the Spurs connection. I lived in Toronto for a while, though it was many years ago.
Yes, the italians love drama. The argentineans, too! You probably know we have a huge rivalry with them. People everywhere I know release their fireworks when Argentina loses or gets scored on. They play dirty too, a lot of "cera" and "catimba" (like flopping in basketball).
Yes, I remember Zidane's headbutt. That was totally unexpected, I saw it live in the France x Italy final a while ago. He was a great player, one of the greatest of his decade.
I think Poland will not go far. They rely too much on Lewandowski, and they played in such a cowardly way that I stopped rooting for them. A very disorganized defensive system too.
In soccer, the semi/finals almost always are composed by some combination of Brazil, Germany and Italy, with the usual suspects appearing too (Argentina, and most recently France and Spain). Uruguay's days as a powerhouse are long gone, and England comes and goes relative to expectations.
It's very hard for an underdog to go all the way due to the huge talent disparity, but it's been happening more lately (Turkey in 2002, Croatia in the last one, Netherlands recently too), meaning IMO that the field level has been equalized for a while. The african and asian teams have greatly improved over the years as well, if you have seen them in the early 90s, they were simply "bucha de canhão" (cannon fodder) for the other teams, lol.
Above all, I think you should pull for Brazil too... we have a connection, don't we?
I won't accept any beating around the bush from you!
