Germans can do protest how they want, doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to take it as disrespect or see it as hilariously hypocritical.

They are allowed to do whatever they want, just like we are allowed to call those people homophobes.

im sure they have a few names for western neocolonialists as well

i have a better solution instead of all the name calling tho: stop the comedically hypocritical lecturing and play futbol.

cheers.

I expect a more boring day tomorrow, with the 2 big teams already qualified, and I don't expect to watch the score of the other game, in either case. We have 2 straight games, with those 4 teams fighting in a head-to-head match to qualify.

Basically if I have some connection, however created, then I cheer that team on. For example, when Zidane was playing I cheered for France. Favourite player back then.

Italy's always fun to watch for the drama when they get fouled (they're not the only ones. Other teams have learned lol).

That time Zidane went berserk and rammed his head into the Italian player's chest :o

Brazil always seems to have incredible dribbling and passing skills.

Also fun to see which underdog rises to strike down a Goliath.

Brazil and Portugal are the only undefeated teams so far, I think. We'll see how long it lasts.

I'd like to see England or France win with Poland somewhere in a surprise mix. Seems like it's Lewandowski's last WC so it would be nice to see him get some success. Of course Poland and France play each other in the next round so... tall task, but not insurmountable. So many supposed great teams have been caught so far.

Oh, I didn't know you lived in Canada. I thought that you lived in Texas, because of the Spurs connection. I lived in Toronto for a while, though it was many years ago.

Yes, the italians love drama. The argentineans, too! You probably know we have a huge rivalry with them. People everywhere I know release their fireworks when Argentina loses or gets scored on. They play dirty too, a lot of "cera" and "catimba" (like flopping in basketball).

Yes, I remember Zidane's headbutt. That was totally unexpected, I saw it live in the France x Italy final a while ago. He was a great player, one of the greatest of his decade.

I think Poland will not go far. They rely too much on Lewandowski, and they played in such a cowardly way that I stopped rooting for them. A very disorganized defensive system too.

In soccer, the semi/finals almost always are composed by some combination of Brazil, Germany and Italy, with the usual suspects appearing too (Argentina, and most recently France and Spain). Uruguay's days as a powerhouse are long gone, and England comes and goes relative to expectations.

It's very hard for an underdog to go all the way due to the huge talent disparity, but it's been happening more lately (Turkey in 2002, Croatia in the last one, Netherlands recently too), meaning IMO that the field level has been equalized for a while. The african and asian teams have greatly improved over the years as well, if you have seen them in the early 90s, they were simply "bucha de canhão" (cannon fodder) for the other teams, lol.

Above all, I think you should pull for Brazil too... we have a connection, don't we?

I won't accept any beating around the bush from you!

But I'ma enjoy their L :)

Speaking for myself... But no lol, I don't think Germany lost because they were "too woke". They can do what they want. But I also don't have to support it.

I was glad too see them lose after their "we have no voice" antics. These underdog teams in Africa + Japan and elsewhere just play with much more energy and pride for their respective country. So much more fun to root for. While these western nations were just looking for reasons to complain.

Lot of these privileged western nations always want to push their values on other people. They'll complain about Qatar but only after their respective nations took their bribe money which got Qatar the World Cup in the first place. Exhibit A, Sepp Blatter.

Also, these western nations complaining about not being able to wear "One Love" armbands or rainbow flags, they'll have the same supporters scream racial slurs to their non-white players. We saw it with England when their black players missed penalties against Italy in the Euro 2020 finals. Lukaku always says, when he fails, "he has Congo heritage". Same with Ozil being a Muslim Turkish immigrant if he fails for Germany. Benzema said the same thing. When he fails, he's Arab.

Maybe they should focus on their own country's xenophobia problems instead of finger-pointing at other nations.

I was the first one to talk chit about Qatar. I will admit that. I made a thread about it on the CA board. But this so far has been a beautiful World Cup and at this pace, could go down as one of the best.

Well said, Stannis. Now you're a true member of the "best posters of RealGM" club.

Let people enjoy the sport, for God's sake. Leave politics antics out of this.

Have you watched the "FIFA Uncovered" series on Netflix? You'll love it.

Cheers.

Boring?????

Ghana fans have not forgotten about Uruguay in 2010. They want revenge.

And the Serbs want revenge on the Swiss and their Albanian/Kosovar players. They still remember Xhaka and Shaqiri's Eagle celebration. Serbia had a map of Kosovo in their locker rooms with words saying something like "We do not give up".

We witnessed history yesterday. But I think today will have a couple of epic matches as well.

The Cameroon/Brazil and Portugal/South Korea matches might be boring. But I think Ghana/Uruguay and Swiss/Serbia will be epics.

Same thing with taking a knee.

I have to disagree. USA and westerners should know you can't change deep values. Maybe there's some success stories, but it's mostly Afghanistans on our resume.

Like I said, I really don't see a way to change the Qatari regime unless you conquer them. Not worth it.

And all this pretty much proved to me is almost nobody puts their money where the mouth is. The west still want their oil. Almost all fans there have nothing but good things to say save the ones who can't rep their rainbow flags.

If I actually think about it, Qatar did put their money where there mouth was. They spent like 200 billion on this thing. Bribed their way to host. Got the west to "shut up". And got FIFA to back them. Lot of of it was respect, but lot of it was just $$$. Best Germany could do was passively aggressively post with their hands over their mouths in a team photo.

Anyways, all I really have left to say is that if people wanted to take a social justice stance here, they should have focused on the migrant workers. Clumping everything into one was a mistake. And all this will be forgotten since the tournament has been so great.

if the answer is no, they should stfu and mind their own business.

Millions of people around the world from "privileged hypocritical countries" protested the Iraq war. Will the Germans protest in 2026? Not really the same thing, since the war will not be ongoing, like the current persecution of gay people in Qatar. Lots of people DID protest in the US during the war on terror. Also, no one will silence them in the US if they did want to protest. FIFA might try to I guess, since they're like the IOC in that regard, gotta protect the bag, but it wouldn't matter to Americans if someone did decide to protest the results of a war that ended around a decade prior to that event. The US has a pretty rich history of athletes and activism, and that has only really increased lately. Which is something you've probably complained about.

bro - I am asking you a simple question:

will Germany do the same thing in 2026 when the WC is in America?

yes or no?

who is a worse human rights abuser...Qatar or the US? who has murdered and displaced MILLIONS the last 2 decades? Qatar or the US?

simple questions.

Both.

IN reality europe is the only place were more or less HR are actually respected, and not by all countrys and not on the same degree.

Btw i can actually talk bout Qatar, Iran, Egypt, Turky, Morocco since ive been THERere and watched first hand how things are.
Usa too of course.

People were already upset the World Cup was moved into Fall/Winter.

But yeah, they should have done just went all in and done Christmas games. It's on a Sunday. Or they could have done Saturday.

But I'm guessing FIFA, players, coaches wanted to be off for Christmas if it meant the World Cup being moved?

Or maybe fans just wouldn't want to go to Qatar for Christmas lol?

Looks like we are still getting boxing day on December 26th which is pretty big day for the EPL.
