I've been critical of both but in truth ever since we got out of the group they've absolutely shut down the oppositions midfield.

It works in tournaments, especially if you have Lionel Messi, but in league, I think you still need more creativity.

Hilarious people question the penalty. You can't make contact from behind, esp any contact with feet. Clear pen and just a fail from Dembele. Doesn't matter if the contact is soft, the pen wasn't.

Nonsense. That was 100% a penalty. It’s just a stupid foul by Dembele

I don't even know how this is debatable.

My sense is that yes the Argentine player went down in a heap, and yes the French player clipped him. Didn't hit the ball first. Or at all.

people are just obsessed with "fix" in football to make every decision fit their narrative, moreso than any other sport.

This penalty would be reviewed in Europe. There's little doubt.

The ref/VAR would be roasted if this penalty wasn't reviewed.

The basic thing is to call the ref to check the replay and then he'd have to embarrass himself by standing with his decision of rewarding a dive or reverse it (the more likely scenario).

Can the VAR ref call the pitch ref or is it only up to the latter to consult VAR?

Var ref tells the main ref he should go and review the call. The main ref cannot instigate the check, he can only be notified that he should go and take another look.

Yes, on a penalty, the VAR never overturns the penalty directly when it's "subjective".

In this case, the VAR would deem the contact to be minimal. So the ref would review that.

Because France is not known for making dumb fouls. People have their biases.

Mbappe looks gassed. Argentina playing like they are down 2-0.
I wonder how long they can hold out for.

Bad one from Rabiot but De Paul doing something stupid or reactionary might be France's best chance

I don’t think France should have taken out Giroud.

Di Maria is a well known diver/cheat.
