Why is that 'amazing'? They qualify for CL, they play in CL.
I'm not familiar with the old format, but only admitting the victors of each league sounds quite lame to me. It also discourages the great end of season battles we see for Europe spots (at least in EPL). It sounds much more greedy to only admit the league champion (usually a hugely wealthy club) then shower them with more money rather than spreading it across 32 (or the upcoming 36) entrants in a single competition.
