I don't believe this is true. Gordon Hayward was their guy and for a brief moment when he left and Mitchell hadn't quite emerged as a star yet, Gobert may have been their 'franchise guy'.
He's the best defensive player in the world right now and Utah wins games off their defense. He is their franchise player. Even his offense is coming along well.
He isn't a role player by any means.
Since Rudy Gobert became a starter, the Jazz are 142-90 (61.2%)
They're 18-30 in that same span without him. To translate that to wins, they're a 50 win team in the West with Gobert or a 30 win team without. The Jazz have posted a cumulative DRTG of 103.3 since he became a starter with him on the court while posting 109.0 DRTG without.
For comparative reasons, that 103.3 DRTG would be the #1 in the NBA right now and 109.0 DRTG would be a bit worse than the league average around the 15th spot.
With Gobert, teams attempt 28.1% (15th ranked) of their shots at the rim and convert at a 60.2% (#1 ranked) rate. The average 2PT shot distance is 8.57 feet out.
Without Gobert, teams attempt 31.6% (#3 ranked) of their shots at the rim and convert 65.2% (19th ranked) of their shots. The average 2PT shot is attempted 7.56 feet out.
