That being said, if CP3 comes back and then plan is to “win now” then I don’t think drafting a backup big is the right idea. Bigs in general take very long to develop and wouldn’t fit exactly with CP3’s timeline. Plus we already have a young backup big Jalen Smith who was a very good draft prospect yet couldn’t beat out Frank Kaminsky for minutes all season long. I think that may repeat itself.
I think backup big is something that should be addressed in free agency or trade with a veteran guy that has the weight, strength, height and ability to battle in the paint.
Unless the Suns see a big man who is super NBA ready and basically a “plug and play” prospect, I’d pass. And usually “plug and play” guys don’t fall this late to the first round. There’s been some rare cases sure but not usually.
I think adding a player with ball handling and playmaking skills should be the move here. Whether that’s a wing or a PG (future CP3 successor or Payne replacement) doesn’t matter all that much imo.
Right now Suns have 3 ball handlers on the roster capable of playmaking and that’s CP3, Book and Payne. Problem is that playing all three together shrinks the Suns size significantly. If there is a 6’5+ player with a strong frame that can solve this then it would help the team quite a bit regardless of if CP3 returns or not.
We desperately need a bigger guard. One of the issues withe Moore, Carter and Galloway is none of them had the size to compete against bigger players on defense, and none of them were potent enough offensively to compensate for that. Give me someone with size, or at the very least a plus wingspan.
