He's out of position right now and it shows. It also doesn't help that the rest of his teammates are matadors on defense as well. The defensive aspect of his game is going to require time and good coaching. The latter part I'm really concerned with right now.
Igor's challenging him defensively. He's worked with plenty of defensive bigs in the past..Gobert, Ben Wallace, etc... Sean Miller was a defensive coach. Ayton just generally lacks awareness outside of a guy right in front of him. It won't change overnight, no matter how good of coaching he gets.
Guys have to decide to play defense. Typically most guys are either good defender or are not good defenders most of their careers. But, guys like Deandre Jordan had similar problems as Ayton to start their careers and got better. Ayton just looks lost a lot at UA and here. Seems he has a hard time picking up team concepts. These coaches drill it into him and spend a lot of time looking at tape and how things should have been done.
