He's out of position right now and it shows. It also doesn't help that the rest of his teammates are matadors on defense as well. The defensive aspect of his game is going to require time and good coaching. The latter part I'm really concerned with right now.

Igor's challenging him defensively. He's worked with plenty of defensive bigs in the past..Gobert, Ben Wallace, etc... Sean Miller was a defensive coach. Ayton just generally lacks awareness outside of a guy right in front of him. It won't change overnight, no matter how good of coaching he gets.

Guys have to decide to play defense. Typically most guys are either good defender or are not good defenders most of their careers. But, guys like Deandre Jordan had similar problems as Ayton to start their careers and got better. Ayton just looks lost a lot at UA and here. Seems he has a hard time picking up team concepts. These coaches drill it into him and spend a lot of time looking at tape and how things should have been done.

Ayton's poor defense at the college level and at the NBA level is never because of Ayton

Hardest position to learn. two, I commented on where his defense is lacking. To pretend that his entire defense is bad is false.

I gave him props for his individual post defense and individual perimeter defense too. But overall, it's frustrating to see how far behind he is from a team defense standpoint

How much is him and how much is our team? I know his rim protection is... wow...lol, but to come here to get better at D and get pissed when he doesn't? I can't get mad at him. I want him to be more aggressive on D, but him sitting on the bench in foul trouble is worse than those blow bys in my opinion....right now.

We have one? Our defense is hot garbage just like it was last year and so on and so on and so on....

Yes, he has a hard time picking things up. Did last year and this year. Booker is among the worst defensive players in the league. Ayton is not anything close to a last line of defense or a guy that picks up team defense and lacks awareness. These guys play the most minutes. I mean everyone and their mother knew this going into the draft. We knew what we were getting. Don't expect a coach to turn it around overnight just because he's had a lot of success with other teams and players over time....it still takes time and they player(s) have to work on it. Hopefully Ayton has it. I have always wondered if awareness is something most people can learn.

Ultimately it's everyone's responsibility to play their part on the defensive end. Just because he's not the only bad defender out there doesn't mean he's absolved from playing his part well.

Unfortunately for him, as center in the NBA, there are higher expectations from him as the last line of defense. That's just what it is. No good team in the NBA (outside of probably a Lebron-led team) has below average rim protection so if he's to play major minutes on a good team, he has to at least be average.

Listen, I criticise him not to put him down or to pass judgement on him as if he's the final product. I criticism him because I want to see him play better, on both ends of the court and being the #1 overall pick and being a C that needs major minutes, he has to play better. Players in worse situations have come out better and if he's as talented as hhe/we think he is then he'll come out better without having to resort to pointing fingers at anyone else.

His man-to-man defense looks fine to me.

It's the blind side help, awareness, and rotation that needs a lot of work.

His individual defense has always been fine. No one's really been down on him for that. It's all that other team stuff that's holding him back

That because he was beating up on inferior competition and now he is facing legit centers who are intimidating him. He didn't do that very much though...and one of those pics was there before last season because I used it as an avatar before the AZ season even started.

The other was probably from when they beat UCLA after he was accused of taking the $100K.

How does a 6-7 190lb SG 'boxed out' the 7-1 250lb Man-Beast that is Ayton all the way to near the 3PT line with zero resistance ?

He’s just getting back to the other end to protect the rim.

Just like he was here when Boston had to have a 3 and everyone was outside of the 3 pt line and we were supposed to be defending it... viewtopic.php?f=27&t=1717435&start=400#p70092830

Eh. Ariza had inside position on that drive and Booker's guy went to double team on Ayton. Had Ariza thrown up a prayer Ayton would have jumped for the board and dude in front of him would have just flopped leading to a over-the-back foul on Ayton. Then everyone would just complained that Ayton shouldn't be so dumb to jump over an opponents back.

Damn i miss Barkley so much. He would have floored him so Ferguson would never try this again.
