Hell I would even be willing to take the last year of Fry's deal in that trade if the insisted. It actually makes some sense for Cleveland as it would give them another ball handler off the bench and while knight is paid well they are in all out win mode without a ton of other options to get better so might be worth a gamble. If the suns took Fry it would also give Cleveland a trade exemption that could be valuable as the look for a wing defender.
For the suns it would all be about clearing knighs salary but Shump and Fry could also provide some of that "vet leadership" they like talking about without jamming up their cap sheet with long term contracts. By the summer of 2019 they would have all the dead weight off their books and that's right about when the young guys should be hitting their stride.
We'd have to take Frye, but there is no way we could find a better trade than that if they'd do it. I wouldn't really want Knight if I was the Cavs or LeBron and I don't think they really need another ball handler as long as they stagger Kyrie and LeBron, and if they keep Deron Williams or if he signs for the minimum or something they definitely wouldn't need him.
Shump's a decent defender and Frye has had some good games for them so I don't know that they'd do it, but if they were convinced Knight could be a good spot up shooter, who knows? You don't want him handling the ball too much though..they need ball movement or the ball in Kyrie/LeBron's hands.
But yeah, it's a great idea if they'd consider it.
I think this was my idea. Thanks for the props. But like you said Cavs are in win now mode - Knight is going to be moved for a bad contract at least Shumpert is one year less and does provide defense - which the team needs with Ulis off the bench.
Frye is interesting - because like you said it creates a trade exception but how about this
Yesterday I mentioned Thompson and Shumpert for Knight and Chandler
What about this one - especially if they don't bring back Bogut and Frye is out of the rotation:
Chandler and Knight for Shumpert, Frye and than ask Derrick Williams if he wants to sign with phoenix for 3/16m with the first year the only one guaranteed for the exact amount of the cap needed for the numbers. I think its about 4.5m . Its the Keith Van Horn Aaron McKie type deal
Shumpert rolls off a year before Knight
Frye rolls off a year before Chandler
Granted, if you can find a better deal for Chandler take it but its probably going to be an expiring type deal
Suns get cap space; Cavs get guys that can help them win now.
