What about some of those guys in the top 10 as rookies? Or Gobert in his career? Or Jokic? Do rookies typically not do well?

Obviously Carter Jr and JJJ are killing it this year but I wonder how often that happens.

Jokic was -7.3% in his rookie year (this season he's -7.0%), which is excellent. It doesn't surprise me though, he's got an amazing IQ and is probably the most skilled big man in the league. Gobert was -8.4% as a rookie, but that was why he was drafted in the first place. Ayton was drafted for different reasons. Yes, it seems like it's quite rare that a player improves at rim-protection as much as Len did, but it's not impossible.

Nah, with Len it was just about his physical development. He had to add some professional athlete weight. If Deandre does that...... :o  8-)

Hard to fathom that even though we hated them, a Len/ Chriss front-court was better defensively than what we have now. At least Chriss blocked some shots and Len stumbled over and fouled people clumsily, while pouting about calls.

It's still early of course...very early, and a lot of people hated Len, but he played pretty well last year. He just didn't get a lot of minutes because they played Chandler a lot and some Monroe when he was here.

But per 36 rebounds, blocks, turnovers (surprising), DBPM, ORTG, DRTG he was better than what Ayton has been so far. And they had nearly the same TS%. Points per 36 were not far off either.

Great info. Do you have Ayton stats for the first 10 or so game vs the last 10 or so game?

First 13 games: +1.5
Last 13 games: +2.8

He's gotten slightly worse compared to the start of the season according to the data. But 13 games is a very small sample size. So it's possible that he got better and the stats aren't reflecting it.

Deandre Ayton said last night that he was "glad" the #Suns were on a back-to-back, that it was a test to see if they could replicate the energy from a spirited OT loss to the Clippers. Spurs have jumped out to a 10-3 lead. Phoenix is 1-of-6 from the floor.

Been wondering about this...knew his blocks were up but wondering if his DFG% within 6 feet has improved.

20 years old.

I still take him over Doncic and I think a lot of franchises would as well.

What can be so justifiably frustrating with Ayton is that you can absolutely see how if he just does a few simple things better just how good he could be... but that should also be encouraging because in contrast with some of the other guys like Bender, Chriss, or even Jackson you can at least see a real path where he can become a very very good player. With those guys at times their play leaves you wondering not if they can become great but if they can even stick in the league. I'd much rather have the problem of a guy leaving me wanting for more than a guy who leaves me wanting for anything resembling good basketball.
Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow! What a Ride!-H.S.T.

Have a feeling Ayton will be scary good next year if Suns can get Zion. It would open a lot of space for Ayton to operate in. And the passion he would bring to this team is also something that is desperately needed. I'm just afraid when top rookies see this dysfunctional FO and say that they would rather stay away.

That's good to see and hopefully not just sample-size false.

Ayton as an above average defender, with the offensive skill we know he has, is a franchise center and worth the first pick in the last draft.

I think that tweet is a bit biased/deceptive, since you need to look at the DFG differential to spot any improvements because every opponent has a different season average.

I'm not sure about the spacing (Zion still hasn't got the 3PT shot yet) but I have a good feeling that Zion could make a better entry pass to Ayton in the post than any player on this team right now. A 6'6 280lb big man with a better entry pass than any of our "PGs"
