Anyway, as for Hassan, Mario, Biggie & Wenyen... I still can't believe Olshey flipped them into Kanter, Jones, ROCO & Giles.
that's wildly incomplete context on the outgoing side
* Biggie and Gabriel were just cut and their rights renounced. The only thing they were converted to was open roster slots
* Portland had to renounce Whiteside in order to use their full MLE since they were holding onto Hood
in other words, what you didn't include in the outgoing assets ledger was
1a) the full-MLE
1b) Blazers being hard-capped losing some potential flexibility
1c) the loss of any potential Whiteside S&T because of the hard-cap
3) the 7M TPE used for Kanter
4) 2020 first round pick
5) 2021-26 first round pick; meaning any Portland leverage to trade 1st round picks is mostly dead for 6 years
6) apparent 'loss' of the BAE because of luxury tax concerns
on paper, the Blazers improved quite a bit in their 4-10 rotation over last season. Some of the fits are questionable but the season will reveal whether that's true or not
but it's loopy to act like Portland gave up little of value. They actually gave up quite a bit in terms of current and future assets to build this roster. And because of tax issues and hard-capping, Blazers signed Jones and Giles to awkward contracts in terms of team protection. They could both be free agents next summer and the Blazers will only have non-Bird rights. That limits Portland to only a 120% raise, and that might not be enough
this off-season seems to be case of Olshey, about 2-3 years too late, operating with a sense of urgency. That it finally soaked in that the candle of Dame's prime is burning brightly. I believe Olshey's seat was getting hot and the heat was coming from both Dame and Seattle
