I've seen a lot of people suggest trying to sign Horford. I just don't get that...

Admittedly I'm not an avid Hawks fan, so I haven't watched him a ton. However, he really hasn't stood out as "impacting" the game when I have caught Hawk games. It appears he has decent (not great) advanced stats, so maybe I have just caught watching him on off nights.

it's true there are some amber flashing lights on Horford. His rebounding rate and FT rate have declined the last 3 seasons. His FG% is down but that's because he increased his 3 pt attempts from 0.5 a game to 3.1 a game. I really didn't like finding his FT rate being .123...that's pretty bad

now, if you put his advanced metrics against this years Blazer team, Horford ranks 2nd in PER, 1st in Win Shares, 2nd in WinShares/48, 2nd in defensive box plus/minus, 1st in box plus/minus, and 1st in Value over replacement

Horford is still a good and versatile defender, and this season, per36, he averaged 17 points, 8 rebs, & 3.6 assists with only 1.5 turnovers. That's a 2.4 assist/turnover ratio which would also be 1st on the Blazers.

He can play either C or PF and maybe more importantly, he could play with either Plumlee or Davis, which isn't true for a lot of bigs, at least not under Stotts

Stotts would have a field day with that line up.

Let Hendo, Montero, Kaman, Roberts, Crabbe and Alexander walk. Dream offseason.

If only the salary cap was ~130 million....

We couldnt sign Barnes, anderson, harkless, and Korver (Is korver a FA this year?) for 60 million in cap space? I threw in Leonard because there's no way he gets a good deal after stinking it up this year and having a season ending injury on the same shoulder he's injured 2 or 3 times already.

Sign Leuer, Turner, Sessions. Keep everyone else except Henderson

Lillard/Sessions (I just like him a lot as a back up PG but I don't care that much)
McCollum/Crabbe/Connaughton
Aminu/Turner/Harkless/Montero
Leuer/Vonleh/Alexander
Plumlee/Davis/Leonard

Weeeeeee. Lots Of different line-ups. That's for sure. Everyone just has to be happy playing 15 minutes each :)

The longer this playoff run last - the greater the dividends it should be paying for the Blazers. Not only does Neil Olshey improve his E(xec)OTY chances, but more Free Agents have to be considering P Town as a legitimate target. They already know the fan base is great and the facilities are outstanding; Paul Allen offers a first class operation and Terry Stott's is a great coach with a wide open scheme. Now they realize the Dame/CJ combo is strong enough to carry this team into contention. Any of these guys who want to be the final piece or even the Man to a franchise have to consider the Blazers a real possibility. Greg Monroe's rationale was that Milwaukee was closer to being a genuine contender, but that has not borne out. I could still see him in play - if the Bucks don't want too much to get out of what they now believe if a bad contract.

While the Blazers have been fortunate in their achievements, it has been over an 82 game schedule so it's really not a fluke. We've enjoyed better health than some, but we were definitely due. (Roy/Oden/Matthews, etal). The key to this will be for NeO to make the right calls and get that Difference Maker this offseason - coordinated with resigning the guys we want to keep. If we miss this opportunity, we may end up just paying our current guys in a year and not being able to upgrade our talent base.

Whether it's free agency - or a trade (or the Draft!) - this Playoff Run is only helping our chances to get "that" next piece to move closer to a championship window. One would think the Blazers need a few more star quality guys, but its best not to bet against Dame and Company!

In previous years, Olshey has gone for reasonable players on the first night of free agent negotiations...
I think he goes for the gusto this year. He has Dame, CJ, Stotts, fans, playoff status, and money on his side.
If he hits the jackpot, it could be a franchise changing moment.
If he misses out, it won't kill us because we're still playing with house money in a way.

I love being a Blazer fan right now.

I think we need a more dependable PF that can space the floor while Plumlee or Davis are in the game but are big enough to defend and rebound at that position as well. We already have Aminu & can potentially retain Harkless to be a small ball 4.

These are all the PF free agents that made .5 or more threes per game and are under the age of 30.

Its really too bad that the relationship between the Blazers and Batum soured so much. Despite all of his shortfalls and inconsistencies I would love to have him back. I think his shooting percentages could get back to where they were in 2013/2014. Unlike Turner he's at least a threat from the outside and would give us another ball handler next to Lillard & McCollum we could desperately use.

This rotation would be really deadly in the modern NBA.

Lillard/CJ
CJ/Crabbe
Batum/Aminu
Leuer/Aminu/Davis

he played in NY this year and had by far his best season so far.

by the way, if you match up his numbers this year against Jabari Parker, Williams come out on top. But don't mention that to Bucks' fans. They are sky high on Parker, and almost all of them wouldn't trade Parker for Lillard. They steadfastly believe that Williams/Parker is an insulting comparison, even though the two players had nearly identical measurements at the pre-draft combine, and both seem to be laboring under the tweener stigma

I'm puzzled at how many of you are leaving Steve Blake out of your offseason plans. How are the Blazers supposed to trade him again if they don't sign him first?

Portland Trail Blazers - Cap considerations:
Thought this might be a good way to bring major pieces into play.
Basketball Insiders shows some lower Max contract amounts, but I used 25 & 30% against the salary estimate.

Assumption: 92M Salary Cap

Guaranteed Salary (under contract) $ 47,102,74
Inclusive* (Includeds QO & Non Guaranteed) $ 59,668,805

*(C Alexander / Montero @$874,636 Unguaranteed / Crabbe $2,725,003 / Maurice Harkless & Meyers Leonard @ $4,045,849)

Cap Holds - Additional cost over QOs
Maurice Harkless - $7,235,148 - 4,045,849 - + $ 3,189,254
Meyers Leonard - $7,689,700 - 4,045,849 - + $ 3,643,851
Allen Crabbe - $2,725,003 difference from QO - + $0
Gerald Henderson - $0 Inclsive - $9M Cap Hold - + $9,000,000

Inclusive adjusted from Offers to Cap Holds
1* with Harkless / Crabbe / Leonard $ 66,501,910 (12 players)
2* add Gerald Henderson (bird rgts?) $ 75,501,910 (13 players)
- Not sure if Bird rights come if we don't waive the Hendu cap hold - it would be the only reason to take on the Hold.

Whitesides - Max offer - $23,000,000 + 1* = $89,501,910
Whitesides + 2* = $98,510,910
(*Need to shed $5.6M - Meyers (or Harmless/Henderson / BBInsiders show Max at $21.6M)

10 year vets (Horford - Howard) about $28,000,000 est.
(Need to shed Meyers (or Harmless/Henderson) & unguaranteed.

Greg Monroe - $17,145,838 - $17,884,176(PO)
requires assets going back to MIlw - TPE +???

$ 66,501,910 (excludes Hendu) +$17,145,838 = $83,647,748 ($8.4M still remains under cap + whatever asset they take).
$ 75,501,910 + $17,145,838 = $ 93,647,748
(waive Montero & C Alexander would cover - Or traded asset)

Cap considerations Old news? I prefer retaining our guys with a Major upgrade versus waiving and hoping an Ezili or Alrich type would be better than Meyers at a reasonable price. (I still think Meyers has upside). I wish we could go after Kanter, but rule prohibits us from signing him for a year since his own team had to match OUR Max offer. Does not apply to Monroe since Detroit did not match their RFA.

I would definitely look at Christian Wood as a cheap gamble at power forward. He might be one of those hidden gems or he might just take over Alexanders spot on the bench but he's worth thinking about.

Blazers already had a lot of cheap gambles in their roster.. All this team really needs is adding solid finished talent.

Portland already has two cheap gambles on their roster in Montero and Alexander. They need an
upgrade over Aminu and Harkless for their front court.

They definitely need more bulk. I wonder if Aminu, Harkless, Plumlee, or Davis could add 10lbs of muscle without sacrificing speed or lift. The other alternative is that Vonleh and Alexander improve their shooting and ball handling over the offseason. Conceivable possibilities exist even within the existing roster.
