Manu to play for Argentina this summer

Post#1 » by Nolan » Fri Jun 20, 2014 6:46 pm

http://blog.mysanantonio.com/spursnation/2014/06/20/ginobili-to-compete-for-argentina-at-fiba-world-cup/

Reports of Manu Ginobili’s international retirement were evidently premature.

Despite the 2012 Olympics having been characterized as his swan song with team Argentina, Ginobili is coming back for more, announcing “I’m in!” via Twitter on Friday for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain.

The competition runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 14, about two weeks before NBA teams will open training camp. The Spurs play their first preseason in Germany on Oct. 8 against Alba Berlin.

Ginobili, who will be 37 in July, averaged 12.3 points during the NBA regular season, then 14.3 in the playoff as the Spurs won their fifth championship.

Can't say that i'm surprised but I can say that i'm not too happy about it either. If we want to make another run at it we need him well rested and healthy.

Not a fan of this. Argentina probably isn't winning anything either way. Parker limped through this season because of FIBA and he's just 32.

Hopefully he talked to Pop and they have a rest plan set up. Maybe the best course would be to just give him a month or so off at the beginning of the season.

It depends on how they utilize Manu. If he plays 35-40 minutes I'd be disappointed. If Argentina plays poorly a and it's obvious they will not win, I hope he rests. If he averages 20 minutes for ten or so games it shouldn't be that bad. He'll have been probably doing that type of workout anyway to get ready for the year.

In the past I would normally be against this but we have our championship. If he wants to do it then so be it.

This just adds to my feeling that we'll see people being injured next year.

Duncan hasn't had an injury in a zillion years and likely due to have one.

Manu is going to play this summer, meaning he's not gonna have enough rest.

Parker is playing just too much ball. Finals last year, and then play in that summer tournament whatever, and then come back to NBA, and we go back to Finals, and then he's in FIBA now.. and then go back to NBA after that.

I know Parker's minutes will be limited, but even when he's only playing 30 minutes a night this season, he was exhausted and Pop rested him like he's 35 years old.

Not a big fan of this either, I just hope any of our Spurs playing in the summer stay healthy and rested enough to properly contribute for a try at a 6th ring. But hey, if the Spurs organization is okay with it and the players feel like it, it's mostly on them to stay healthy. Wish Manu the best this summer.

I read somewhere that TP9 wasn't playing this summer, which was a relief to me (and POP i'm sure). He had to take two weeks off in March (I think) to get rested for the playoffs. Do you have any sources saying otherwise? Thanks.

My bad. After searching around, TP isn't playing. I thought he was playing.

Well, the Spurs don't need him for training camp and the first games of the season, so i would give him extended vacations and some important conditioning so that he's rested and well physically.

I would be fine with that. It was really fun seeing the Spurs bench and the D league landsknecht of the month step up last season.

Don't be too greedy. Spurs got their 5th championship. Be happy for Manu and wish him success in the FIBAs.

The argentinian team is on it's last legs. It would be nice if the gold medal crew could close out strong.

Manu is a fantastic guy, at his age, still finds time and energy to help his teammates to represent his country. It's really remarkable. So proud of him. I think Spurs should rest him quite a bit at the beginning of the season, and give more minutes to Marco, Green, maybe Cory, or Mills if he stays. There is no rush!
