Why?
1. The Spurs were mired in a three game losing streak and our worst record for a month this decade
2. Tony Parker and Brent Barry were out.
3. Game was in their house
4. The fans wanted blood from last year and screamed like it was a NBA finals matchup.
5. WE STILL CRACKED THEM. If they couldn't beat us last week ... they/Kerr realised that they can't a currently composed.
I have to respect that they are trying to win. This trade at the very least is an admission that they can't win with what they've got.
Yeah, very well said.
I still am loving that win. It was so fun.

I'm pretty upset about this.
Last night I was reading about this trade rumor and everyone (including me) was laughing at it, no way it could be real. I was totally gonna make a 'Let's trade for Shaq' thread here but now he's actually been traded =/
Oh yeah, ditto everyone, terrible trade for Phoenix. One less contender in the West to deal with, but it could be entertaining to have Shaq back in the West.

Honestly, Phoenix hasn't been/isn't too much to deal with. They lack the team to beat good, balanced squads. Especially us.
Save an injury from one of the big three, did/does anybody really think Phoenix could beat us in a playoff series? I just don't see it with the weaknesses the Suns have, and in which have not been improved upon significantly since 2005.
When you lack solid defense, rebounding, a flexible offense, and a well-rounded bench - you need above-average luck to win in the playoffs against a balanced team.

From truehoop on ESPN:
"and when Miami played San Antonio early this season, O'Neal was strictly on Fabricio Oberto and Francisco Elson duty. Three times, late in the game, he ended up on Duncan in a switch or as a helper, and here's what happened: Duncan put the ball on the floor and made a layup, Duncan kicked out to Manu Ginobili for a made three, and Duncan dribbled the ball out of bounds -- my money's on it going off O'Neal, but it was called Miami ball. So, without a dubious call, you have exactly zero success with O'Neal as a Duncan stopper."

I wonder what this means for who guards Parker and Ginobili. I'm guessing Nash will guard Bowen no matter what. Bell will guard one I'm sure, but who guards the other?
On the flip side, we used to hide Parker by putting him on Marion, maybe we'll hide him by putting him on Grant Hill or Raja Bell, 2 players who probably won't be taking it to the rim much.

2 things that must be considered when talking about shaq defending duncan is that amare is a great weakside help defender (not so good one on one, much like camby is a far better help defender) and if duncan gets past shaq (more like when) then amare will be there which has to mean something
also, amare wont get in as much early foul trouble now which should free him up to be far more aggressive, especially when he is at C with shaq on the bench
just things to be considered especially given that against you guys more than anyone, amares foul trouble has been a very decisive factor in wins and losses

Laker fan here. I havent read every post but as a laker fan I like this trade for the suns. I think this makes them worst. Shaq owns the paint and if thats the case amare wont have any room to operate. Shaq also slows the game down. As long as the balls in Shaqs hand its not in Nashes hand, and thats a good thing for the other team. Plus you took a guy in the Matrix who was playing about 35-40 minutes and replaced him with a guy who plays about 30 minutes. This will be very interesting.

Do you remember our Utah series last year? Okur was defending Duncan inside and Boozer was the weak side defender. But Spurs have found a way to feed Oberto and he became the star of that series.
Right now, you're very similar to last year's Utah.
Nash-Bell-Diaw-Amare-Shaq
Deron-Fisher-Krilenko-Boozer-Okur
We've passed that Utah easily and it would be same for this year's Suns.

difference being that okur and boozer dont attack the paint and draw fouls and test the defense
okur is soft and boozer prefers to shoot jumpers than make post moves
time will tell about it all, im not 100% sold on it yet, i need to see it all first, but at best, i do believe it might just be crazy enough to work
i still cant believe it has happened

Okur is soft, but he has three point range and he's 10 years younger than Shaq. That's why he can stay fresh while defending Duncan, but Shaq has condition problem.
Boozer prefers post moves, and they're different. But both Amare and Boozer are average defenders and Oberto can show bright performance when they forget him.
On the other hand Bowen is much better on defending Nash than defending Deron. And now we don't have to think Marion as well.
