What's the chances of Tiago Splitter becoming a star

Post#1 » by Yung D-Will » Tue Jul 13, 2010 5:38 pm

Have the Spurs drafted another international gem?

Could he learn from Duncan as much as Duncan learned from Robinson?

Tiago Splitter, the Brazilian two time MVP of the Spanish Supercup and one time MVP of the Spanish League, is finally bringing his talents over to the NBA.

Splitter was drafted by the San Antonio Spurs back in 2007 with the 28th overall pick in the first round.

Four years after buyout complications, Splitter has officially signed with the Spurs in a reported deal of three-years, roughly $10.9 million.

One GM stated that Splitter is the best signing of the free agent offseason.

Since the majority of NBA fans, analysts, and coaches focus their eyes on simply NBA teams and players, it's difficult to know how an international player will pan out competing against the best basketball players in the world.

Will Splitter emerge as a top big-man threat in the NBA?

Will he be another Darko Milicic?

Splitter, 25, standing 6'11" and weighing around 240 lbs, has much room for physical improvement. He must grow that toughness mentality if he wants to be respected in the league.

The center posted 15.4 PPG and 7.1 RPG on 59.5 percent shooting in 38 games during the

Well he's only 25 and has a great skillset already. I'd say 50/50. Best case he becomes the next Pau Gasol, worst case he becomes the next Nene.

I'm expecting 12 and 8 from Tiago next year. I think he's got a pretty good chance at becoming a star in the NBA and with Duncan, Pops and a solid veteran core showing the ropes only increases those chances.

Damn it, I forgot where I read it but I'm sure some of you read some thing like what i'm about to mention online.

I remember an article saying stuffs like this:

RC or Manu I believe mentioned stuff about our system is complex and that the first year is more about getting acclimated to the system, the team, and for rookies even more because they also need to get acclimated with the NBA rules that's why newcomers (veteran and rookies) always have a hard time during his rookie year.

Also I think it was RC who said that it's not likely that we just give the ball to Splitter and let him make a play for us.

Also remember stuff that while he has NBA size, he does not yet have NBA strength and the needed stamina for the full 82 game season. Meaning he still needs to get stronger and quicker and basically develop his body more.

Read something that he's likely to be backing up Tim Duncan in his first year much like Blair did.

I can't think of anything else right now but really, if you believe all that, then these things should be in your expectation:
-Inconsistent production because of lots of things. getting acclimated to a new system, new rules, stamina, and he's bound to hit the wall somewhere along the season.
-Foul proned because he'll be learning a new rule and it'll take him some time to adapt. Hard to expect he masters the NBA defensive rules all before the season start.
-Not going to score as much because let's face it, he's not a better scorer than Scola (agreed by most) and Scola isn't exactly some superstud scorer. He's not gonna torch everybody like crazy. His offensive game isn't that advanced. His baskets will likely comes from pick and roles off passes from Tony and Manu. Even so, he's likely to be 5th in the depth chart in terms of go to scorers. You don't usually go to your 5th option when looking for a basket. PErhaps when he's having a really really good game, but other than that.. blehhh....
-Defensively he's gonna be inconsistent. There will be good nights when he shows glimpses on what he can be in a consistent basis and there will also be nights when we just yell "come on man... stop making silly mistakes!!!"

Like I said in another thread, I'm expecting:
-18 minutes (Like what Blair got last year and because we're somewhat deep in the frontcourt now and Splitter will eventually be a good player, but right now... right this moment, guys like Blair, Bonner, and Dice are just as good and as productive.)
-7 points (Will have to get his points from pick and roles and off passes and put backs)
-5 rebounds (in 18 minutes, that's good enough for me. Blair last year got 6 and Blair is a monster rebounder)

Won't average many assists because he's likely to be the recipient of passes instead of the one making plays. Won't average many blocks because he's a good to decent shotblocker and even the best shotblockers usually average 2 in 34 minutes. 18 minutes, he'll probably get like 0.7 blocks per game type of numbers.

hey guys-
magic fan here and also blogger for 4pointshooter.wordpress.com

i've been watching tiago splitter since he was eligible for the draft back in 2003, 04 cuz one of my best friends in high school was brazilian and he told me about this kid. been keeping up with his progress since and for those who may not be fully aware let me tell you

this guy's post moves are arguably more polished than pau gasol's. his jump shot isn't quite as consistent yet, but he plays bigger than he looks on both offense and defense and you're getting the best player outside the NBA right as he's about to hit his prime and he's gonna give you 7-8 very good years of basketball with probably 2 or 3 all star appearances sprinkled in there

i've blogged a number of times on how lucky RC Burford is when it comes to drafting and having things miraculously fall to his lap and this is probably one of the biggest draft steals in nba history... but the worst/best part is that he's not even the best draft steal in your franchise history...

anyways, thought i'd give my two cents since i've been a splitter fan for a while, congrats and i'll be rooting for him to be ROY... though likely playing behind duncan will probably limit that.

do you guys as fans see yourself going with a frontline rotation of Duncan McDyess to start then Blair, Splitter and a dice of Bonner in there? or Do you think you can go ahead and start Splitter? I'm of the opinion he's better than Marc Gasol already and should start next to Duncan and allow timmy to play the high post game... then you'd have two really effective pick and roll big men

Probably less than 50/50 he ever gets to an all-star game. Not going to be a first and probably not second option on a title team.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Have you ever seen Tiago play? Cause I seen many times and chunnyboy´s description is not wrong.

Barring injury TS will be an all star. NBA has very few legit 5's any more. Once he starts getting solid mins probably yr 2 or 3. He is all-star bound.

We don't need him to be a star - he just needs to ease the workload off of Timmy.
