Yeah if we rewatch we'd see a player keeping the offense afloat through a terrible first half. Love when people say "watch the game" and then only use a box score stat to support your case.
He came in with 5 minutes in the first. And he scored all 12 points Raptors points had until Jakobe scored with 9 left minutes in the 2nd. He is not great defensively but he was not the cause of all the defensive breakdowns. Throw in a steal and offensive rebound because he was active as usual, and he had a great game.
No, I said watch the game because it fell apart as soon as he came in. The box score just corroborates what happened. Some people see scoring and think it means everything but there’s more to the game. Maybe there’s a reason only he was scoring? Maybe Orlando didn’t see him as a threat and focused elsewhere? Maybe he wasn’t getting through screens or boxing out effectively?
Again, watch the game.
Nah. You gotta go back and watch that stretch lol. Gradey has been pretty terrible lately, but he was very good tonight and the run that the Magic went on late 1st/early 2nd had absolutely nothing to do with Gradey. Just look at the FGM in that stretch.
16-11: miscommunication between Ingram and CMB up top on a slip screen; Gradey helps from the corner and contests but Black’s layup is good
20-13: Bane hits a ridiculous fadeaway jumper on the baseline over Shead’s contest and the ball goes in from behind the backboard
25-16: literally everyone BUT Gradey fails to collect a rebound off a missed free throw and it’s put back in
27-18: again, three Raptors fail to collect a defensive rebound and Bitadze puts it back in
31-18: Bane blows by Scottie 1-on-1 for a layup
33-20: WCJ hits a midrange jumper over Bamba
35-23: multiple Raptors fail to grab a board underneath, Gradey falls asleep while watching the continued struggle to reel in a loose ball then Bane cuts in for a floater
37-25: Paolo finishes in semi-transition over Bamba
42-25: Shead goes for a homerun play and misses the steal, forcing Gradey to close out on Black who then swings the ball to an open Richardson in the corner
45-25: after some good ball movement, Paolo hits a corner three over a half-asleep Bamba
47-28: Paolo gets inside position then receives an entry pass and finishes inside over CMB
50-30: Black goes ISO against Ingram then hits a step-back three
Raptors were outscored 39-26 in Gradey’s first stint. Gradey scored 15 points — and chipped in a steal and offensive rebound — while the rest of the team struggled mightily to score. Of the 39 points Orlando scored in that stretch, you could maybe place the blame on Gradey for 4 (a loose ball foul at the end of Q1 that led to 2 points at the line and MAYBE the 2 points Bane got after multiple Magic OREB on one possession) but that’s it.
