This is a risky move, there's no doubt about that. In all respects, this past year has been awful for O'Neal, and BC is making the gamble that he'll return to previous form. If he does, we get an all-star calibur player to man the center position, giving us our best player there since... ever. A healthy O'Neal brings a defensive presence to the middle that Bosh simply can't provide, which alone should improve our team from the previous season. For how long he can sustain any level of production however, is a question that is going to be looming large over his time here (if this deal does, in fact, pan out).
On the other hand, if he continues his play from last season, we'll get a half season of a <30mpg low efficiency scorer, one who will likely be out of the league by the time his contract ends as he breaks down further. O'Neal's rebounding totals have gone steadily down since his injury problems started, and at the current rate he brings nothing more to the boards that Bosh doesn't already. As mentioned, O'Neal brings dangerously little to the offensive end; his efficiency last year was abysmal for a supposed post player, and just plain bad for any player at all at under .500 TS%. Clearly, this acquisition has nothing to do with his offensive production. But if his skills are declining in other areas in the game, and O'Neal no longer has the durability to play a full season, then can this trade really be considered worth it? Is this the move that will take the Raptors to the next level, or is it just a placation of the worried masses?
How this trade will end depends on which O'Neal will show up, or rather whether or not he can avoid injury long enough to show up at all. O'Neal's days as a star player are over, but that doesn't mean he can't give a boost to a team as a defensively-minded role player. People expecting anything more however, will be disappointed. At the very least, this move gives the appearance of progress, the revival of hope to quell all the fans who've been eyeing their balcony since the season's unceremonious ending by the hands of Orlando. But whether or not it will amount to anything greater remains to be seen.
