Either way, this is a good and needed deal for both teams. Even at 60 games a year, O'Neal is a needed defender and finisher on the break or in Toronto's preferred slow-down set. He can run a screen and roll and the two bookends of Jermaine and Chris Bosh will be a tough cover on either end. Non-NBA pundits have blanched at the amount of money the injury-prone O'Neal will make over the next few years, but they never seem to remember that Toronto is sending out just as much salary to take in O'Neal's big contract.

hmmm I dont like this trade.... I just feel TJ Ford should be able to bring us more... On top of that we give up an expiring contract AND the 17th pick. Unless we are getting the pacers pick or something Im just not a big fan of this trade...

So in a sense BC has turned Charlie V + Bonner + E. Williams + a 1st for J.O + possibly someone else? Sounds good to me. All those who don't like this trade -- Ford is an injury away from not being in the NBA, think about that before you say we got ripped off. Plus history suggests that disgruntled players play better and are more motivated on a newer team (check VC, Gasol, etc) Oh and we did just fine without TJ last year, plus even if JO goes down we can trade his expiring next year for another disgruntled star player, win-win Raptors!

This is a risky move, there's no doubt about that. In all respects, this past year has been awful for O'Neal, and BC is making the gamble that he'll return to previous form. If he does, we get an all-star calibur player to man the center position, giving us our best player there since... ever. A healthy O'Neal brings a defensive presence to the middle that Bosh simply can't provide, which alone should improve our team from the previous season. For how long he can sustain any level of production however, is a question that is going to be looming large over his time here (if this deal does, in fact, pan out).

On the other hand, if he continues his play from last season, we'll get a half season of a <30mpg low efficiency scorer, one who will likely be out of the league by the time his contract ends as he breaks down further. O'Neal's rebounding totals have gone steadily down since his injury problems started, and at the current rate he brings nothing more to the boards that Bosh doesn't already. As mentioned, O'Neal brings dangerously little to the offensive end; his efficiency last year was abysmal for a supposed post player, and just plain bad for any player at all at under .500 TS%. Clearly, this acquisition has nothing to do with his offensive production. But if his skills are declining in other areas in the game, and O'Neal no longer has the durability to play a full season, then can this trade really be considered worth it? Is this the move that will take the Raptors to the next level, or is it just a placation of the worried masses?

How this trade will end depends on which O'Neal will show up, or rather whether or not he can avoid injury long enough to show up at all. O'Neal's days as a star player are over, but that doesn't mean he can't give a boost to a team as a defensively-minded role player. People expecting anything more however, will be disappointed. At the very least, this move gives the appearance of progress, the revival of hope to quell all the fans who've been eyeing their balcony since the season's unceremonious ending by the hands of Orlando. But whether or not it will amount to anything greater remains to be seen.

Dwyer knows our team better than our own beat writers do. Read that column or the one he did before about the O'Neal trade -- he's either a fan or just a terrific basketball mind, or both. He definitely knows his Raptors.

Ford is just as a big of a gamble as us taking in JO.

If he doesnt pan out, we have a huge expiring on our hands which could net us assets.

If he does pan out, were contenders in the East.

It's a win win situation.

I don't understand any resentment towards this trade considering you guys were about to get Boris Diaw for the same package you are sending to Indy. Jermaine is a huge upgrade over Diaw and instead of Toronto getting ripped off, this is a pretty fair trade for both teams.

I don't know how I feel about this trade. On one end I'm excited about the prospects of JO and Bosh with Bargs coming off the bench, on the other hand we still haven't addressed the need for a big time wing player and now likely don't have the assets to do so.

At the end of the day, the best thing about this is that we are going after some stars. This is a fair deal for both teams. Both key player's have a history of injuries and although giving up the pick hurts it is necessary to complete the deal.

Maybe Colangelo can work his magic and pick up a late first rounder and get a prospect wing player.

Does anyone look at this as turning Charlie Villanueva into Jermaine O'Neal (via trades of course)? Just curious.

amazing
if JO even plays half as good as he used to we'll be contenders
if his knee gives out
and boshes knee starts to flair
we end up in the lottery and get derozan...

then 2 years later
C: JO
PF: Bosh
SF: Artest (because he likes JO)
SG: Derozan
PG: Calderon

on our bench... who cares.. look at that starting 5....

Anyone think this will hinder the "progress" of Bargnani, by no way am I saying Bargnani is great and all, but don't you think packaging Bargnani, Moon, Parker, or someone else to get a quality SG/SF would be better than keeping Bargnani as a role player who was the former #1 pick?

Here is the possibility i came up with, it makes sense to me maybe nobody else:

ESPN - Deal Complete - Official July 9

Post#400 » by lusty milkman » Thu Jun 26, 2008 12:58 am

On the eve of the NBA draft, the Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers finally agreed to a trade.

Sources told ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher that the Pacers and the Raptors have agreed to a deal that, pending physicals, would send Jermaine O'Neal to Toronto in exchange for T.J. Ford, Rasho Nesterovic and the No. 17 pick in Thursday's NBA draft.

Ford's contract makes him a "base-year compensation" player, meaning the trade cannot be completed until July 9.
This is my post. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
