Feschuk on TSN1050 this morning was suggesting that Masai would have a problem with Ed's politics. And maybe vice versa. If Ed is conservative, he probably didn't like the way Masai brushed off Doug Ford at the parade.
It was really unfortunate that basketball guy George Cope retired from Bell recently. He would have been an important ally who could have helped put a stop to this nonsense. No wonder Masai was insecure. His position was 100% dependent on the 75-year-old Larry Tanenbaum. Fortunately as governor, Larry had sole authority under the NBA consistitution to bring back Masai, regardless of Bell or Rogers.
Also from the article (according to Feschuk), the deal is for 15 mill/yr, plus a share in any increase in value of MLSE. An opposing franchise (we can only assume the Wizards) offered a 3% stake.
I'm pretty sure all these guys are loathe to support progressive agendas if it costs them money. He wanted Bobby Webster to get promoted, because that's the cheaper option.
From the article it sounds like they caved on 11 of Ed's 12 conditions, and the hold up was that play with the Jays. This all seems like just one giant rich a-hole flexing his leverage, which is what Bell and Rogers routinely do with our gov't.
