No he doesn’t. Ben Gordon would be the undoubted #1 pick in this draft. McCain is a good shooter in the mold of a Malik Beasley type. There are levels to this.

There is also significant expectation league-wide that Toronto could command a serious overnight offer for its No. 31 pick from a team looking to jump to the front of Thursday’s line and select its top remaining player. Essentially, no team in that range could offer players and their representation anything resembling a guarantee that they’d be standing pat.

As many have suspected, the interest is there for #31 pick for trades around the league

Interesting. Brown and 31 for a lotto protected first from a team like the Kings, Suns, Bucks would be nice, but I could also see Masai taking a Chomche or a Dadiet. If we go Edey, Ware or Missi first round then maybe Chomche is not in the plans, just seems like such a Masai pick.

Been on my watchlist for a while and is in my Top 3 preferred players at #31 along with Jaylon Tyson and Nikola Djurisic.

I like his game a lot...seems to have a little bit of everything. The one issue for me is he's small and the game seems to be moving away from these type of guards. Even FVV, who has seen success is pretty inefficient, all things considered. Could be another Malachi Flynn situation as well.

But if we're looking for a guard at #31, I think he's the best available.

I think he will be better than KO. He had a decent block rate and he can switch onto guards at times. I agree that he won't be a plus on defense but I do think he is passable not a target.

He looked a bit better playing with Lively so let's see how he is with Poeltl. Playing big lineups with Scottie seems like it would be a smart experiment. If we test him out to close games it could get messy but worth it. I think the scoring and spacing he offers could change this team's dynamic.

To me, he could win ROY in this situation. It is the right fit for him to get minutes and do well in his roles in small and big lineups.

One of the reasons Colangelo personified draft schmaft was he knew the certainty of players with a known nba resume was a safer bet than late lotto to number 30 draft prospects. He knew Kawhi was a huge talent, we worked him out, and he picked JV. He had no clue Giannis was possible MVP caliber talent and he traded the pick that took Stephen Adams before Giannis! All was done to land the Raptor GOAT. B.C.'s lack of forsight brought us the 2019 chip. Leadership and in game brinksmanship does not grow on trees. It had to be seen at the nba level in some measure and is usually conveyed by scouting and contacts. We can only speculate wheher we'd still have a chip had Masai drafted Giannis as would be considered a normal course of action but there are no sure things and I sure as hell would not lay a bet on what Filipowski is gonna be. Why would anyone do that? Ware at the very least is the superior athlete.

I disagree. McCain put up better freshman stats than Ben Gordon did. Ben was a stumpy 6th man, drafted after a college championship junior year where he only put up 18 5 and 5 on great shooting splits. That's less than KJ Simpson in overall numbers and impact.

Ben got drafted third, but would go around 10th in a re-draft.

No chance that player type goes number 1.

I feel like that one-handed **** would get swatted in this league. I'm not a fan of college guards that rely on push shots and floaters in the lane. I find they end up needing re-calibration once they get a steady diet of NBA PFs and Cs. Not impossible to overcome, but it takes longer for them to adjust than it does guards who go after contact.

What his agent says doesn’t really mean much to me. An agent would never say he expects his player to drop

Even aside from this ACL injury, Topic has dealt with several injury issues this season. This is the second injury to the same knee. He seems injury prone

I agree. But could also mean he isn't training enough or correctly.

I ask this as someone who likes the player (in theory).

There's only so much a coach can do. The player's gotta want it. The benefit of drafting him into our situation is that he'll be forced to earn his minutes, which should make accountability a little easier.

In general, Ware is so difficult to get a read on. He's undeniably talented and has the tools to be a top 5-3 pick in this draft, he's just so unbelievably frustrating to watch. Even in games where he puts up good numbers, I felt like he disappeared for long stretches. The not running pack on defence at times is also maddening for an otherwise mobile center. That said, the more I sit with it, the more I talk myself into it, cause if the lights come on, he's Jarrett Allen with a shot (though with less touch on the hook). I see a similar process happening with Missi (i.e. me selling myself on his high-end outcome), but that's another story

Yeah, I'm trying to sell myself on him at 19. He's the best talent available likely to be there imo. If he didn't have these questions he'd be going in the same range as Lively did and we wouldn't be able to pick him.

Ware is the type that when gets to a certain level, he takes the foot off the gas pedal. Maybe he matures but if he doesn't get that 2nd efforts matter at next level, coaches will bench him. These are the hardest types to project.

How many 'lazy prospects' have actually (and truly) turned it around in their second half of their career? I don't think there have been too many (especially bigs). Funny enough, the player I am thinking of that did turn their career around (in terms of their work ethic) is Vince Carter himself after he got traded to the Nets.

Ben was a dynamic bucket getter at the college and NBA level. McCain might become that over time, but I don’t see it. He looks like more of a spot up shooter than a guy who can go get it for you.

When I hear anyone questioning someone's motor, I'm out. If you drift in and out of games in college, when you're trying to land life changing money, the likelihood that player changes his ways after finally getting life changing money in the NBA is pretty low.

There have been a few "does he actually like basketball" guys that turned out to have good careers, but yeah - far more have flamed out.

Honestly, we only got a championship because of the spite from San Antonio in not wanting to send Kawhi to LA from Brandon Ingram. However, getting Lowry was a great option because he had so many intangibles especially leadership. Ware looks like a great athlete but I don't see him as any kind of a leader and not a guy who reads defenses and communicates to his teammates about coverages - but I think Toronto will dig into that. I think he has a long way to go towards being a defensive anchor.

With Filipowski I think his team rallied around him and he seems like a guy who will communicate and see the game well early on in the NBA. If he is given minutes on this developmental team he can probably average 15 PPG which might win ROY in this class unless Dillingham blows up.

Feel like a good challenge for Darko.

I think Darko would be perfect as a coach to get the max from him .
