I understand where people are coming from with "don't fix what is working", but I'm with the group that would like to see just one Raptor who can move well at 250+lbs. With our overall length, I don't think we necessarily need a 7 footer - height isn't as important as length and strength.
Long-term roster construction-wise, we want to spend as little on the 5 as possible, and ideally not too much on the 1 either, and spend the money on the positions that historically win games. So going for big swings here doesn't seem to make sense. I mean, if someone breaks out in our system and it works, cool, but I don't think it should be an intentional move considering the asset cost (ie. Turner, Ayton, etc.).
We've done well thus far, but we don't want our long-bois accumulating eccess wear-and-tear battling the T-Rex's of the land, Embiid, Jokic, Ayton etc. We've got to remember we want Scottie 100% for as many years as possible, and that OG has had an ACL repaired, and Siakam has had a labrum repaired. Major injuries, that even when healed, need to be remembered.
I look forward to Precious' development. He has a defined role now, and he can focus training for it. He'll get even stronger, and with our system it's likely his bbiq improves. He's already looking to move the ball more than force his own offense, so his development is still important. As his skill-set improves and refines, he'll be able to back-up the 4 efficiently too. We shouldn't be sleeping on him - he'll at worst be our lead bench-big for years to come.
The beauty of Birch is that he's so solid, you can plug him in for 1 or 20 minutes, and he'll give you something. He's the perfect vet big for us to roll with 2 young 5's that we develop for our future, while he instills his work-boot mentality into them, and steps in when they don't have it going.
